- Located in the Pacific "Rim of Fire", the Philippines has proven ore deposits, particularly of gold, copper, nickel and chromite. Historically, the U.S. played a pioneering role in the development of large-scale mining in the Philippines with the establishment of mining operations in the mountain region of northern Philippines in the early 1900s.
- Philippine mining is back on track following a Supreme Court ruling that upheld the Philippine Mining Law of 1995, thereby relaxing foreign ownership restrictions on large-scale mining. This has paved the way for the entry of new international players who have also introduced new processes and technologies to local mining operators. With the resurgence of the sector comes an expected surge in demand for mining equipment, supplies and services.
- According to Philippine government estimates, nine (9) million hectares or roughly thirty (30) percent of the country’s total land area has been identified as having rich metallic mineral deposits owing to its geologic structure. To date, existing mining permits cover only less than 2 percent of these prospective areas.
