While China has relied on a domestic market for mining equipment, their technology remains 10 to 15 years behind that of other countries. U.S. coal mining equipment manufacturers and coal mine investors have prospects for long-term opportunities in China’s coal industry, as it is expected for the government to invest $150 billion in this sector by 2020.

Coal accounts for 69% of energy production in China. Therefore, improving clean coal extraction and combustion is critical to reducing overall emissions, and China will invest in foreign technologies improving efficiency and cleanliness.

In terms of extraction, U.S. companies enjoy their greatest competitive advantage in supplying heavy coal mining machines and systems, for both underground mining and open-pit mining.

Due to a high incidence of mining deaths and injuries as a result of poor mine safety, China will invest six billion in the next several years in mining safety equipment for large state-owned mines, creating significant opportunities for foreign companies to export safety equipment to China.
