University of Hawai'i Sea Grant achieved college status in 1972 and is based at the University of Hawai'i in Honolulu. Hawai'i Sea Grant developed a new model for Sea Grant that is based fundamentally on enhanced collaboration - the center of excellence model. There are currently six centers of excellence that bring the capabilities of the broader university community to the people of Hawai'i.

The Aua transect on Tutuila island in the remote island territory of American Samoa recently celebrated its 100th anniversary, and scientists from throughout the region traveled to the island to celebrate and conduct the 100th year transect survey.
