Facility Design

Throughout the Energy Systems Integration Facility design process, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory hosted workshops in which stakeholders from across the country provided feedback on the proposed design and functionality. The resulting capabilities, both human and equipment, provide high-value assets that might otherwise be cost-prohibitive for private-sector organizations to build, maintain, and operate on their own.

Planning for the research facility and its innovative data center took a holistic "chips to bricks" approach to energy efficiency to ensure a symbiotic relationship between the data center and the facility's offices and laboratories.

The Energy Systems Integration Facility was strategically designed to house innovative research to transform how the nation generates, delivers, and uses energy.

The following workshops were hosted by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory as part of the Energy Systems Integration Facility design process:

  • October 2012: Increasing the Value of Microgrids Through Focused RD&D Workshop
This workshop included discussions about commercial microgrids, research opportunities, and future research topics to address. See the workshop agenda and presentations.

  • September 2012: Visualization of Electric Power System Information Workshop
This workshop included roundtable discussions and planning for information visualization capabilities at the Energy Systems Integration Facility. See the workshop agenda and presentations.

  • August 2012: Integrated Deployment Workshop
This workshop included discussions of deployment challenges of clean energy technologies and how to address these challenges through partnerships. See the workshop agenda and presentations.

  • August 2012: Hydrogen and Fuel Cells Workshop
This two-day workshop included roundtable discussions as well as information about composite data products and hydrogen and fuel cell grid integration. See the workshop agenda and presentations.

  • May and June 2012: From the Building to the Grid: An Energy Revolution and Modeling Challenge
This two-part workshop included roundtable discussions on building integration, including communication and control strategies. Workshop materials include:

  • October 2011: Energy Systems Integration Facility Workshop
Topics of this workshop included final plans for the Energy Systems Integration Facility, facility capabilities, R&D needs, and how to work at the facility. See the workshop agenda and presentations.
