The U.S. 6th Fleet flagship, USS Mount Whitney (LCC 20), concluded a port visit to Theoule-sur-Mer, France, after taking part in several events honoring the 68th anniversary of the Liberation of Provence, Aug. 19.

BOLLEVILLE, France -- June 4th, 2012 was a special day for WW2 Army nurses and sisters Ellan and Dorothy Lewinsky. Both sisters served as nurses at the 164th Field Hospital from August 1944 to May 1945, which was located in Bolleville. Ellan and Dorothy also received honorary citizenship at the ceremony today. A memorial was inaugurated in honor of WW2 medical personnel, unveiled by both sisters.

U.S. and French forces attended the ceremony in the Picauville town square that remembers the transport aircrews and paratroopers who were killed when their C-47 aircraft was brought down by German anti-aircraft artillery during the early morning hours of June 6, 1944 during the invasion of France. The 86th Airlift Wing is based at Ramstein Air Base, Germany.

During the 68th anniversary of D-Day, special operations troops stationed in Europe performed a High-Altitude Low-Opening demonstration at Mont Saint Michel in France.

MARIGNY, France – Two U.S. Army veterans who fought in WWII, one from the 4th Infantry Division and another from the 83rd Infantry Division, met with a German WWII veteran who fought in the battle for Marigny, northeast of Carentan. A ceremony was held, where a French veteran received his nation’s highest military honor.

GRAINGES, France – Dutch, German and U.S. paratroopers joined a ceremony held French townspeople in Graignes, south of Carentan, where U.S. 82nd Airborne Division fought during the early morning hours of June 6, 1944. The paratroopers had been dropped off course. About 100 paratroopers held off 2,000 Germans for 2 days. Some escaped with a few townspeople. Others were burned in the town church. A month later, on July 9, U.S. Soldiers liberated the town. The ceremony was held on the church grounds.

Service members from Italy and the United States came together for a Memorial Day ceremony at the Sicily-Rome American Cemetery and Memorial in Nettuno, Italy, May 28.

After the reunification of Germany, Bernhard Fey stood in front of a large cross made out of birch tree logs and felt sorry for the man the cross memorialized.

Service members from Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa, Commander, U.S. 6th Fleet, and Allied Joint Forces Command Naples, flew to Cannes, France, Nov. 4, to join international service members to participate in a commemoration ceremony at Cannes City Hall.
