The NICoE Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is a four-week program for patients coping with both traumatic brain injury (TBI) and psychological health (PH) conditions. During the program, a team of providers works with patients and their families to create a tailored treatment plan that focuses on the mind, body, and spirit. Patients play an active role in creating a plan of action to increase resilience and well-being, learning the skills they need to self-manage their symptoms in the long-term.

This program is open to active-duty service members with TBI (mild to moderate) and PH conditions who have not responded to traditional treatment.

Weeks One and Two: Clinical Evaluation

The beginning of the program focuses on diagnosis, evaluation, and pain relief. During the first two weeks, patients:

  • Learn about the different treatment options available at the NICoE
  • Work closely with their care team to identify issues and determine the best treatments for their unique health needs
  • Learn about the tools they can use for TBI management and recovery and work with their care team to set short- and long-term healthcare goals
  • Attend courses focused on improving confidence, setting goals, staying focused, and managing energy, which continues through weeks three and four

Weeks Three and Four: Treatment Planning and Family Support, Now and Beyond

During the last two weeks of the program, the focus shifts to treatment planning and education to help patients understand their symptoms and take charge of their care once they leave the NICoE.

  • Based on clinical findings and what treatments resonate with the patients, the clinical care team creates a tailored treatment plan for each patient based on the treatment options selected in weeks one and two
  • Families are included in the treatment plans so they can learn about the skills and resources needed to help patients recover during and after their stay at the NICoE
  • The NICoE’s team of providers communicates directly with the home team to share treatment recommendations in order to provide a smooth transition after patients leave the NICoE
