What to Expect

If you are a patient that will be participating in the NICoE Intensive Outpatient Program or the NICoE Evaluation Track, here are a few things you need to know:

  • You will be assigned a Point of Contact (POC) prior to your arrival at the NICoE who can answer your questions.
  • Your daily schedule will be fairly robust. You will need to arrive at the NICoE by 0700 each day. You will meet with your treatment team on your first day. You will meet with a variety of providers and participate in educational classes and groups throughout the remainder of your stay. You will be done around 1600 each day. Each afternoon, patients receive their individual schedule for the following day.
  • You should bring all medications (to include over-the-counter medications and supplements) with you to the NICoE on your first day. The NICoE staff will need to see them in their original containers. If you have a CPAP machine, please bring that with you.
  • If you are participating in the IOP, you are welcome to bring your family with you during Weeks Three and/or Four. Contact your assigned NICoE Therapist for details about family travel. There is a family program available to all families of patients in the IOP. Family-centered programming is scheduled primarily during Weeks Three and Four of treatment. In addition to participating in some individual appointments with you, family members are welcome to participate in a variety of education and therapy groups. Read more about Family Services.
  • Childcare is available. Austin’s Playroom is an on-post childcare facility that offers childcare services to military families at no cost. Families are allotted 25 hours per week of child care. Please note that you will need all of their vaccination records and flu shot information for your children, as children without them will not be admitted, no exceptions. If your child has an allergy or asthma, additional paperwork will be needed.
  • Pets are not allowed on base; however, service animals with vaccine records and service dog certification are permitted on base and in the Fisher House. They are subject to the WRNMMC instructions regarding animals on base. If you are planning on bringing your service animal, please contact your POC for further direction.
  • Certain attire is expected during your time at the NICoE and certain items are prohibited. You shoud plan to wear service-specific Physical Training (PT) gear or appropraite athletic attire while at the NICoE. Open-toed shoes and t-shirts with graphics other than those on appropriate PT or athletic gear are prohibited. No weapons are permited including small pocket knives. If you have further questions, contact your POC.

Where to Stay

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) patients stay in a NICoE-dedicated Fisher House on the Bethesda campus. The building was specially designed to support patients and their families throughout their stay. Upon arrival at the WRNMMC, IOP patients should pick up their Fisher House welcome packet at the Command Duty Office across from the NICoE. This packet will include your key, parking badge, and Fisher House location.

NICoE Evaluation Track (NET) patients will need to coordinate lodging arrangements with their command prior to their arrival. Information about lodging options will be sent to NET patients prior to their arrival.
