DON Electronic Signature Policy Released

Published, August 30, 2010

The Department of the Navy Chief Information Officer has signed out SECNAVINST 5239.21: "Department of the Navy Electronic Signature Policy," making electronic signatures the preferred means of conducting business transactions within the Department.

This policy, which does not mandate the replacement of handwritten signatures, will benefit the DON by reducing the Department's reliance on paper transactions, improving information security and sharing, allowing quicker access to documents, and reducing costs and environmental impact.

This policy is consistent with the Electronic Signatures in Global and National Commerce Act, the Government Paperwork Elimination Act, and the Paperwork Reduction Act.
