Mission

The Student Health and Wellness Center is committed to providing excellent healthcare to our students. Student success, development, and preparation for global citizenship is dependent on the many facets of good health. Mindful of our diverse population we promote responsible personal health choices to enhance each individual's lifelong health and well being.

Within our purpose we support the mission of the University to ensure service and quality in teaching performance, public service and outreach.

Access

Students enrolled in the current semester who have paid the medical service fee are eligible for services at the SHWC.

Medical visits are by appointment only. To schedule an appointment, call (940) 565-2333 or schedule through the MyOsh online service. A student ID card is required at check-in. Students with University-endorsed insurance should bring their insurance card as well. Click to see other pages for more information on hourslocation and parking, or pricing.

Staff

Our professional staff includes licensed physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, certified lab technologists, radiology technician, pharmacists, administrative, business, and medical records personnel. Part time staff includes psychiatrists, registered dietitian, and a massage therapist.

Patient Privacy and Confidentiality

The Student Health and Wellness Center is compliant with HIPAA, FERPA, and other state and federal law. Our staff takes all possible steps to protect the privacy and confidentiality of patients' Protected Health Information. For more information, visit our medical records department.

Billing and Insurance

The visit with a general practitioner is free but the SHWC offers competitive pricing on ancillary services such as pharmacy, lab work and x-ray. Payment is expected at the time of service and may be made by cash, check, or by credit card (AMEX, Discover, Mastercard, or Visa).

As an extension of our customer service, the SHWC files medical insurance claims for the University endorsed student insurance policy underwritten by United Healthcare Student Resources. The pharmacy also accepts some prescription insurance plans.

Meadows Center for Health Resources

The Meadows Center for Health Resources offers a wide variety of health and wellness opportunities including:

  • Condom Club for receiving education on sexual health and how to protect yourself

Closures for Holidays and Between Semesters

The Student Health and Wellness Center clinic and pharmacy is closed between semesters and on University holidays.

The 2015-2016 academic year has the following closures:

Options When the Clinic is Closed

You can call the 24-hour nurse call line at 855-984-3803, PIN 1072 to speak with a registered nurse.  They can provide phone triage to determine if your issue constitutes an emergency that requires immediate medical attention or if you can wait until the clinic reopens.  They can also provide suggestions for treating symptoms until you come in to see us.

If you find yourself in need of medical treatment when we are closed, you can visit the local hospital or minor emergency clinic of your choice. In Denton, you can choose from:

Parking

A limited number of designated parking spaces are available for students using services at the SHWC. Students who utilize these spaces will need to request a parking validation at the time of check-out.  The SHWC will not issue validations for patients who park in metered spaces.  Patients must park in the Patient Parking spaces.

Dr. Voorhees is the Student Health and Wellness Center's Executive Director as well as a board certified physician who provides general family medicine services.  He received his DO from UNT Health Science Center and has been with the Student Health and Wellness Center for over 20 years.

Dr. Hermann is a licensed gynecologist.  She provides general women's health services, as well as specialized procedures, including colposcopies and long-term contraceptive (intrauterine device [IUD] and implant) insertions and removals.  She received her MD from Texas Tech School of Medicine and has been with the Student Health and Wellness Center since 2011.

Dr. Schenck is a board certified ER physician who provides general family medicine services and specialty travel medicine.  She does not perform gynecology exams.  Dr. Schenck received her DO from UNT Health Science Center Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine and has worked part-time for the Student Health and Wellness Center since 2006.

Staff Physician

Dr. White is a board certified physician.  She performs general family medicine, gynecology, orthopedic, dermatology, psychotropic medication management, and cardiovascular and pulmondary, as well as seeing new allergy patients.  Dr. White received her DO from the College of Osteopathic Medicine Pacific and has been with the Student Health and Wellness Center since 1995.

Physician

Dr. Surve is a triple board certified specialist in Performing Arts Medicine.  He provides a wide range of services such as osteopathic manipulation, acupuncture, injections, bracing, practice recommendations, and general counseling.  His services are limited at this time to performing arts students.  He received his DO from Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine.
