This project was started by members of VFW Post 8923 and the City of Carrollton Senior Center. The goal is to collect and share memories and photos from those who have answered the call to serve our country.
In order to be included, individuals must have lived or worked in Carrollton at some point in time. All local veterans and active duty military personnel are invited to fill out the form below, and participate in this new online project. Assistance for VeteransThe U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has launched a new effort to assist people who served in the military that may be struggling after returning from service. Carrollton City Manager Leonard Martin said, “I am very pleased to see this effort by the federal government to assist our veterans who have never received the recognition or support they deserve for giving so much of their lives, themselves and their families to serve our country. You may be a veteran who is struggling or may know someone who is. Please urge them to use the contact information below to get assistance.”
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) aims to end Veteran homelessness by 2015 and is providing at-risk and homeless Veterans with health care, housing, employment, education other job training resources. Trained responders are available to talk confidentially by phone or online chat at 1-877-4AID VET (1-877-424-3838) or www.VA.gov/homeless.
VFW Post 8923: The Kelsie C Edington Memorial VFW Post 8923, is located at 1024 Elm Street, the home of the American Legion in Downtown Carrollton. The Post is seeking new Veterans of Foreign Wars members to come and join (eligibility must be met). The Post meets the first Tuesday of the month, at 7 pm. Bring a copy of your DD214 (for verification only) to the meeting.
Denton County Veterans Memorial Project:
The Veterans Memorial of Denton County features three areas of reflection: 1. At the foot of a large granite monument, recognizing the branches of military service. This area will be for public and private ceremonies. 2. Along the path made of "green brick" sit granite monuments covered by individual Memorial plaques recognizing a fallen loved one, or one that has served or is currently serving our country. 3. A small area for reflection and a place for a memorial bench or statue. There are several levels of support and opportunities to honor individuals who have served through the Memorial Plaque Program. All donations are tax deductable and 100% of all proceeds will go toward the design, promotion, construction and maintenance of the Denton County Veterans Memorial. This project is being spearheaded by Denton County Commissioner Ron Marchant and a dedicated committee of Veterans and family members. Other members include representatives from each member of the Denton County Commissioners Court, members of the VFW and American Legion, a representative from the Denton County Veterans Service Office, U.S. Congressman Kenny Marchant, Texas State Senator Chris Harris; Texas House of Representatives Burt Solomons. Anyone who has a friend or relative who has served in the military or who is now serving can purchase a Star Memorial Plaque with his or her name on it to be placed at the Veterans Memorial of Denton County.
