11/14/12: New Mexico Man Receives 97-Month Sentence for Child Pornography Charges —
Robert Schmidt of Albuquerque entered a guilty plea on November 14, 2012 to charges of transportation and possession of child pornography. An investigation of Schmidt was initiated last year after a maintenance employee at the apartment complex where Schmidt was a tenant reported seeing child pornography on a computer in Schmidt's residence. 6/1/12: Former California National Guard Master Sergeant Receives 30 Month Sentence for Misappropriating $15.2 M —
Retired Master Sergeant Toni L. Jaffe pleaded guilty to submitting millions of dollars of false claims for bonuses and loan payments to guardsmen who were ineligible for the payments. 12/19/11: IRAQI NATIONAL ENTERS GUILTY PLEA ON FEDERAL TERRORISM CHARGES — KENTUCKY RCFL SUPPORTED INVESTIGATORS — On December 16, 2011, Waad Ramadan Alwaan pled guilty to carrying out numerous improvised explosive device attacks against U.S. troops in Iraq. Alwaan relocated to Bowling Green, KY in 2009, where he was arrested and charged two years later in a 23-count grand jury indictment. The Kentucky RCFL examined digital evidence associated with the investigation. Sentencing is scheduled for April 3, 2012 where Alwaan may receive a maximum sentence of life in prison or a minimum sentence of 25 behind bars. 4/13/11: North Texas RCFL Supported Successful Child Pornography Prosecution — Dallas resident Timothy Honnoll, 39, plead guilty in federal court to receiving child pornography, and will serve eight years in prison along with a lifetime of supervised release. The North Texas RCFL provided digital forensics support to the investigation which was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood. According to a press release issued by the FBI's Dallas Division, 600 images and 180 videos of child pornography were found on Honnoll's computer and related storage media.

6/13/11: San Diego RCFL Supported Successful Prosecution Involving Largest Cache of Homemade Explosives in U.S. History — George Jakubec, 55, the unemployed software engineer pled guilty to two armed bank robberies in San Diego after accepting a plea agreement where he acknowledged making and storing explosives and weapons at his home. The residence was destroyed because it posed such a high risk to the community. Inside were nine detonators, 13 grenade hulls and large quantities of the highly unstable Hexamethylene triperoxide diamine, which can explode on contact. He spent hours in online chat rooms having sexually explicit conversations with minors in an attempt to seduce them. After grooming one teen for five months, Wilke made plans to meet in person at a suburban park. However, the teen was a police detective working undercover with the FBI – and Wilke's plans for a tryst in the park turned out very differently – learn why.

3/7/11: "Honor Killing" Defendant Receives Life Sentence — Muzzamiel "Mo" Hassan received 25 years to life for committing an "honor killing" against his wife Assiya, 37 on February 12, 2009. Assiya was found beheaded at the television station Hassan founded in 2004 entitled "Bridges TV," to counter Muslim stereotypes following the events surrounding the September 11, 2001 attacks. A few weeks prior to the murder, Assiya served Hassan with divorce papers and filed an order of protection against him, according to public records The World Health Organization defines honor killings as "murders of women by relatives who claim the victim brought shame to the family." An Examiner assigned to the WNYRCFL was one of the first officers to arrive on-scene and provided digital forensics services in support of the investigation.

1/14/10: Chicago Residents Linked to Mumbai Bombings – In October 2008, terrorists launched a series of coordinated bombing/shooting attacks on several gathering spots in Mumbai, India's largest city. The sites included a hospital, a popular hotel, restaurants, and a seaport. Approximately 164 people died in the attacks including six Americans, and hundreds more were wounded. Although Mumbai is a world away from Chicago, investigators identified a group of local men as key planners in the attacks, which included a plot to bomb a Dutch newspaper in retaliation for publishing a cartoon considered offensive by some Muslims. The Chicago RCFL examined approximately two dozen computers associated with the investigation and provided their initial findings to U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald in less than 24 hours.
According to a 3/18/10 press release issued by the FBI's Chicago Division, David Coleman Headley, 49, of Chicago, pleaded guilty to a dozen federal terrorism charges, admitting that he participated in planning the Mumbai attacks and plotting to bomb a Danish newspaper. By cooperating with investigators and testifying against others, Headley was spared the death penalty.
One of Headley's co-defendants, Tahawwur Rana, 49, of Chicago, was also indicted by a federal grand jury on February 15, 2010, for planning the attacks, providing material support to terrorists and guiding Headley in scouting targets in Mumbai. Rana plead not guilty. Digital evidence uncovered by the CGRCFL helped prosecutors build a strong case against Headley and will likely be presented at Rana's trial scheduled for May 2011. If convicted, he faces life in prison.

2009—Missing Persons Mystery Finally Solved - Missing since 2003 and 2004, Jennifer Marcum, Kaysi McLeod, Terry Kimball, and Leann Emry had but one thing in common – Scott Kimball. The
Rocky Mountain RCFL (RMRCFL) examined Kimball's laptop computer in 2008, and located information about three of the four women, along with violent images of sexually related acts. Kimball is currently serving a 53-year jail sentence for theft and a host of other charges, and plead guilty to the four murders. In exchange for leading authorities to the victims' remains, he received a second-degree murder charge. He was sentenced on October 9, 2009 to 70 years in prison for the four murders, which will run concurrently with his current term.
Prior to Kimball's admission, only the remains of Kaysi McLeod, 19, were found in Northwest Colorado. Kimball led authorities to the remains of his uncle Terry Kimball, and Leann Emry. Jennifer Marcum's body has not yet been recovered. Although Kimball had connections to all of the victims, prosecutors still don't know what motivated him to kill them. Kimball is eligible for parole in 2044.

Bilski Sentenced May 30, 2008 - Clement Bilski, 45, was sentenced to 80 years in New Jersey State prison with a minimum period of parole ineligibility of 61 years. Bilski was convicted of 143 counts, of which there were 52 counts of first degree Aggravated Sexual Assault, 15 counts of second degree Sexual Assault, 74 counts of second degree Endangering the Welfare of a Child (filming) one count of third degree Promoting Obscene Material and one count of third degree Endangering the Welfare of a Child (sexual conduct). All 143 counts involved the same victim and occurred between 1998-2003, when the victim was between the ages of two and six. The
New Jersey RCFL was part of a task force, along with two of its participating agencies, Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office and the New Jersey State Police, which supported the investigation.

Female Half of "Bonnie & Clyde" of Identity Fraud Sentenced 11/2008: Jocelyn Kirsch, who gained notoriety as the female half of the "Bonnie & Clyde" of identity fraud, received a five year prison sentence for stealing personal information from 50 friends, co-workers and neighbors, which they used to obtain fraudulent credit cards. She also had to pay $100,000 in restitution and must undergo mental health treatment while in prison. Judge Eduardo C. 09/26/2008: Prison Time for Man on Drug and Porn Charges SAN DIEGO - A San Diego man who sold 250 grams of cocaine and received obscene material on his computer was sentenced Friday to more than 11 years in federal prison. William Edward Fessler, 37, also known as Kareem Montano, had been charged with distribution of cocaine base and transportation of obscene matter. He pleaded guilty July 1. Fessler's 135-month sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Dana Sabraw.

Warren Steed Jeffs Found Guilty St. George Utah - On September 25, 2007, the trial of Warren Steed Jeffs, leader of a polygamous sect, ended with a guilty conviction. The eight-member state jury rendered a unanimous verdict—finding Jeffs guilty as an accomplice for the rape of a 14-year old follower to her 19-year old cousin. The young woman, now 21, testified that she was forced into the marriage which led to nonconsensual sex. After the trial ended, she spoke outside the courthouse and said, "The trial has not been about religion nor a vendetta. It is simply about child abuse and preventing further abuse." Under Utah law, even with parental consent, a 14-year old is not permitted to marry.

Alleged Abduction Was a Hoax On April 11, 2006, 16-year old Kelsey Stelting placed a frantic 9-1-1 call, claiming that she was abducted at gunpoint while outside her Independence, Missouri home. An Amber Alert was issued, and the FBI brought in 30 agents to join police and county officers in the search. The Heart of America RCFL was part of the team – as is often the case when an Amber Alert is issued within an RCFL's service area. Now safely at home, the teenager admitted that it was all a hoax.
