2/2/11: "Jihad Jane" Pleads Guilty
Colleen LaRose, aka "Jihad Jane," plead guilty to four charges in federal court. The Philadelphia RCFL supported the investigation which involved her and alleged co-conspirator Jamie Paulin-Ramirez, 31, in a plot to murder Swedish cartoonist Lars Vilks, who angered Muslims by drawing the prophet Muhammad with the body of a dog. Ms. LaRose was arrested in Philadelphia on October 15, 2009 and indicted five months later. She plead guilty on February 1, 2011 to four charges: conspiracy to support terrorists, conspiracy to kill in a foreign country, lying to investigators and attempted identity theft. She initially denied using the screen name “Jihad Jane and sending email messages soliciting money for jihadist causes. However, the FBI was tracking her online activities for 15 months prior to her arrest and recovered emails where she agreed to marry an online contact from South Asia and to becoming a martyr. Ms. Ramirez, who Ms. LaRose allegedly recruited, was charged with conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists—she goes on trial on May 2 on a single count of aiding foreign terrorists. The two are only a handful of U.S. women ever charged with terrorism—a sentencing date has not been set for Ms. LaRose. - end - |
