AUTHORIZATION: Section 105 of the Water Resources Development Act of 1986 (Public Law 99-668, as amended). Continuing Authorities Program (CAP).
TYPE OF PROJECT: 206 Ecosystem Restoration Project
LOCATION: Wise and Lee counties in southwestern Virginia.
CONGRESSIONAL INTEREST: Griffith (VA-09), Webb (VA), Warner (VA)
NON-FEDERAL SPONSOR: LENOWISCO Planning District.
BACKGROUND:
· The Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals, and Energy (VDMME) have indicated an interest in partnering with the Corps of Engineers for sites within the Straight, Reeds, Jones, and Cox Creeks (SRJC).
· Potential ecosystem restoration solutions to be evaluated during the reconnaissance study include a variety of measures to improve aquatic ecosystem functions and values.
IMPORTANCE: This project will mitigate acid mine drainage (AMD) problems resulting from abandoned coal mines and construct and restore the ecosystem with construction of restoration treatment systems.
STATUS:
· Corps and sponsor still maintain interest in implementation of Powell II – SRJC. This project requires a new start approval.
