NRC scientists cooperating to detect Baltic oil spills

Ensuring environmental security is a present-day challenge all NATO-Russia Council (NRC) nations are faced with. One NRC Science for Peace and Security (SPS) project in particular, is already tackling a significant environmental threat in the Baltic Sea, and in the process, taking on the ambitious task of becoming a leading region for environmental safety and security. The project aims to improve the detection of oil spills in the Baltic Sea, initially by researching and comparing existing technology for oil spill detection, and then in later phases of the project, by testing the best methods in the South-Eastern region of the Baltic.

NATO-sponsored project helps harvest wind energy in the Sahara

Conditions throughout the Sahara region can be harsh. Many communities in Morocco and Mauritania lack a stable source of energy. Extreme dryness, blistering heat, high solar radiation, as well as limited access to water, services and electricity can make life in the desert difficult for humans as well as stifling economic activity such as agriculture and grazing, which are often unsustainable.

20 years of working with partners to bring progress and peace through science

The first formal meeting of the then NATO Science Committee with representatives of Central and Eastern European countries took place twenty years ago in October 1992. This marked the opening of NATO’s science programme to partner countries, following the end of the Cold War. Reaching out to scientific communities was seen to have natural potential for international cooperation that could be harnessed to help promote peace.
