Provides infant weight checks, breastfeeding support, and questions answered by Pediatric Care staff

 

 

Prenatal Breastfeeding Class

2nd Tuesday of every month


1800 hrs – 2000 hrs

Letterman Auditorium

Located on the ground floor of the Medical Mall

Basic information on breastfeeding.  Learn if breastfeeding will work for you and what to

expect when you go back to work.  Get information on pumping and supplementing.  

Please bring a life size doll or stuffed animal to practice positioning baby for feedings.

 

Breast Pump Loaner Program

Breast pumps available for mothers with children in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit,

 preterm delivery and infants with extended hospitalization.

 

Self-referral or Provider prenatal consults available for mothers who have had 

breast surgery, lumpectomies, nipple or breast piercing, and flat or inverted nipples.

PRENATAL CLASSES:

ALL classes are free! Dates posted in the OB Clinic each month)

  1. PRENATAL SERIES:  These classes are usually held on Thursdays from 4:30-6:00 PM each month.  The first 2 classes are held in the Letterman Auditorium.  The 3rd class is held in the Conference Room of the Army Community Nursing Service in the Old Madigan (Ramp 2).  Fathers-to-be and/or support people are encouraged to attend with you.  Call TRICARE 1-800-404-4506 to register except for the 3rd class please call 253-968-4382 to register and get directions.

a. Class #1-Introduction to Pregnancy/What to expect during labor/delivery at MAMC: This class will describe what to expect during the first few months of the pregnancy, including common discomforts and nutrition requirements of pregnancy and will cover many of the questions you may have about the services offered at Madigan.  Included topics are: signs and progress of labor, common procedures in LDR (Labor/Deliver/Recovery) room and video tour of Labor and Delivery and Mother-Baby unit via PowerPoint presentation. 

(1st Thursday of the month) 

b. Class #2-Labor Management/Newborn care: This class includes a discussion of baby care, normal newborn behavior and what to expect in the first few days/weeks at home.  Due to privacy issues we no longer tour the Mother/Baby ward.  When you are about 34 weeks gestation, you may call the Labor and Delivery Head Nurse, Mrs. Kathleen Judge at 253-968-0711 to schedule an appointment to review your birth plan (if you are 34 or more weeks gestation) and to set up tour if time permits.

(2nd Thursday of every month)  

c. Class #3-Infant/Child safety: The Army Community Health Nursing presents this class.  It offers a step-by-step guide for prevention and treatment of life-threatening situations facing children from birth to 5 years, including:  choking, drowning, poisoning, head injuries, cuts, burns, first aid and injury prevention.  Additionally the issues of childproofing your home, automobile and travel safety, water safety, and what to look for in nursery items are addressed.  Handouts and community resources are available.

  1. SIBLING'S CLASS: Held twice a month on Tuesday afternoon from 3-4:30 PM.  Please meet at the elevators on the 3rd floor of the Nursing Tower.  This class is to help prepare older children for the role of big brother/big sister.  We recommend that you register for class during the 3rd Trimester (after 34 weeks) by calling TRICARE at 1-800-404-4506.  The first Tuesday of the month is for 4-6 year olds.  The 3rd Tuesday is for 7-10 year olds.  Tours of Mother-Baby unit if times permits.

  2. PERINATAL BEREAVEMENT PROGRAM: Provides support to families who are grieving over the loss of their baby through miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, fetal demise, stillbirth or newborn death.  H.O.P.I.N.G. is a parents' support group helping other parents with grieving and healing.  For additional information call the Perinatal Grief Support team.
