Awareness Campaigns

The following are annual awareness events hosted by the USAG Humphreys Army Substance Abuse Program.

Alcohol Awareness Month
April - While communities are faced with a number of substance abuse issues, underage drinking continues to be
among the most pervasive, with nearly 11 million underage drinkers today. As such, April is designated as Alcohol
Awareness Month, an annual public awareness campaign that encourages local communities to focus on alcoholism and
alcohol-related issues.

U.S. Army Summer Safety Campaign
May 25 – September 7 - this 100 Days of Summer represent one of the most dangerous and deadliest times of year on
the nation’s highways. One big reason is a significant jump in alcohol-related traffic crashes and fatalities.
Increased alcohol use throughout the Summer, and particularly around major holiday weekends, beginning with Memorial
Day, continuing through the Fourth of July and ending with Labor Day, has made the 100 Days of Summer a very grim
season for law enforcement, emergency medical staff, highway safety officials, and the friends and families of
impaired driving victims.

Red Ribbon Week
4th Week of October - An annual observance that has become a major force for raising public awareness and mobilizing
communities to combat alcohol, drugs, and tobacco use.  Red Ribbon Week serves as a vehicle for communities and
individuals to take a stand for the hopes and dreams of our children through a commitment to drug prevention and
education and a personal commitment to live drug free lives with the ultimate goal being the creation of drug free
America.

3D Month December
Campaign against impaired driving during the holiday season. Since 1981, every President of the United States has
proclaimed December “National Drunk and Drugged Driving (3D) Prevention Month” to help underscore the public’s
commitment to preventing impaired driving and promoting the use of designated drivers and sober ride programs. The
month of December and the New Year’s Eve holiday also are often highlighted by significant increases in state and
local law enforcement efforts to combat impaired driving such as the use of sobriety checkpoints and saturation
patrols.
