About Our Students
Our large and diverse student body is drawn from countries throughout the Western Hemisphere — from Latin America and the Caribbean to the United States and Canada. The students, average about 1000 a year, represent a cross section of societies from across the region. They are chosen from military, law enforcement, and governmental and non-governmental organizations.
The number of students attending from each country will vary from year to year, depending on Department of State, U.S. Northern Command and U.S. Southern Command priorities and funding allocated by the US Congress.
Countries Represented
The student body is much broader than that of other US military schools where foreign students must speak English. Because almost all classes are taught in Spanish, the institute can teach many individuals who would otherwise not be able to receive training in the United States.
Screening
As with all foreign students attending grant-funded education in the United States, candidates are thoroughly evaluated by the U.S. Embassy and all its agencies in the country of origin, plus a further review at the Department of State, before they are permitted to enter the U.S. for training. This ensures that students arriving in the U.S. have excellent records of personal behavior.
