  • Ambassador delivers remarks to guests
    July 4th Celebration

    U.S. Embassy Nouakchott welcomed 200 people to the Ambassador's residence on July 4 to celebrate America's 236th birthday. The celebration coincided with the 50th anniversary of U.S. embassy operations in Mauritania almost to the day. In honor of the occasion, the embassy created an exhibit that highlighted the history of U.S. government efforts to improve diplomatic, educational, economic, and cultural ties between the U.S. and Mauritania.

    Ambassador Visits Ouadane

    Ambassador Powell attended the opening ceremony of the 2012 Ancient Cities Festival in Oudane, and Deputy Chief of Mission Carol Kalin took part in a ceremony marking the launching of a U.S. government-funded renovation of the wall surrounding the ancient city of Ouadane. Those in attendance included representatives from the Ministry of Culture and elected and tribal leaders.  

  • English Language Lab Opening

    On Tuesday, December 20, Ambassador Powell took part in a ceremony inaugurating the new English Language Laboratory financed by the U.S. Embassy at Ecole Normale Superieur (ENS). 

  • USAID Fighting Food Insecurity

    Ambassador Jo Ellen Powell participated in a ceremony marking the receipt of 400 tons of food commodities composed of fortified vegetable oil, corn soy blend flour, lentils and bulgur wheat. This food will benefit 6,500 malnourished children and 5,500 pregnant and breastfeeding women enrolled in the Counterpart International program funded by USAID.  

  • English Access Microscholarship Graduation

    On October 12, 2011, Deputy Chief of Mission Carol Kalin presided over a graduation ceremony of the 3rd group of the English Access Microscholarship Program. The event was held at the Nouakchott English Center (NEC), the English language provider for the Access Program. During the ceremony, selected students were presented with special “Certificates of Award” and a tote bag full of supplies. 

  • Ari Roland Jazz Quartet tours Mauritania

    The Ari Roland Quartet just completed five days of concerts, lectures, and demonstrations in Mauritania. Ari Roland, Christopher Byars, Zaid Nasser, and Keith Gregory played shows in Nouakchott and Nouadhibou. Their stay culminated in a well-received concert at the Institute Francais on Thursday, November 17.  

  • Grass Roots: African Origins of an American Art

    Grass Roots: African Origins of an American Art, an exhibition at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of African Art, tells the story of the coiled sweetgrass baskets made by the Gullah/Geechee people of the southeastern United States — descendants of slaves brought from Africa 300 years ago. 

  • Picturing the Diversity of the Muslim World

    U.S. photographer Derek Brown, whose work has been featured in The Economist and other major publications, traveled to 28 countries for more than 18 months to photograph the diversity of the Muslim world. He made this image during a visit to a mosque in Fatehpur Sikri, India.
