Command Sergeant Major Kristine A. Purnell, a native of Bay City, Michigan, enlisted in the Army in July 1985. She attended Basic Combat Training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina and Advanced Individual Training (AIT) at Fort Gordon, Georgia, graduating as a Multichannel Communications Equipment Operator (31M).

During her career, Command Sergeant Major Purnell has served in various leadership positions to include Team Chief, Section Chief, Platoon Sergeant, First Sergeant, Battalion Operations Sergeant Major, and Command Sergeant Major.

Command Sergeant Major Purnell’s previous assignments include: 13th Signal Brigade, 1st Calvary Division, Fort Hood, Texas; 32nd Signal Battalion, 22nd Signal Brigade, Darmstadt, Germany; 16th Signal Battalion, 3rd Signal Brigade, Fort Hood, Texas; 307th Signal Battalion, 1st Signal Brigade, Camp Carroll, Korea; 313th Signal Company (RE), 16th Signal Battalion, 3rd Signal Brigade, Fort Hood, Texas; 44th Signal Battalion, 7th Signal Brigade, Mannheim, Germany; The United States Army Sergeants Major Academy, Fort Bliss, Texas; 67th Signal Battalion, 35th Signal Brigade, Fort Gordon, Georgia; 69th  Signal Battalion, 2nd Signal Brigade, Grafenwoehr, Germany. She is currently the Command Sergeant Major for United States Army Garrison, Camp Humphreys, Korea.

Her combat deployments include operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom 06-08.

Her military and civilian education includes the Warrior Leaders Course, Advanced Leaders Course, Senior Leaders Course, and First Sergeant’s Course. Command Sergeant Major Purnell is a graduate of the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy (Class 55). She holds an Associate’s Degree in General Studies from Central Texas College and is currently pursuing a Bachelors of Science Degree in Liberal Arts from Excelsior College.

Her awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal (1st OLC), the Meritorious Service Medal (3rd  OLC), the Army Commendation Medal (3rd OLC), the Army Achievement Medal (6th OLC), Army Good Conduct Medal (9th Award), National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star, Southwest Asia Service Medal with three Bronze Stars, Iraqi Campaign Medal with two Bronze Stars, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon (Numeral 4), Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (5th Award), Kuwait Liberation Medal (Saudi Arabia), and the Kuwait Liberation Medal. She has been awarded the Meritorious Unit Commendation Medal (1st OLC) and the Army Superior Unit Award (1st OLC). She is a recipient of the Bronze Order of Mercury.

Command Sergeant Major Purnell has been married for 25 years to John L. Purnell (U.S. Army Retired). They are blessed with their 2 year old baby boy, Shawn Kristopher.
