Misawa Air Base and Naval Air Facility Misawa are currently supporting Operation Tomodachi, which kicked off at the request of the Government of Japan to support humanitarian relief efforts for those affected by the 9.0-magnitude earthquake and the resulting tsunami that devastated the northeastern coastal region of Japan March 11.
The operation is a combined effort between American forces and Japanese officials and is part of a broader U.S. Government effort to support Japan's request for humanitarian assistance.
"Tomodachi" is a Japanese word meaning "friends."
