Continuous School Improvement
(CSI)
School improvement is an ongoing process through which staff members review student data to guide decisions and teaching each school year. As a result of our review of school goals and strategies this year, the staff has decided to change the school-wide problem solving strategy. We are replacing the Big 6 problem solving strategy with the Understand, Plan, Solve, Look Back (UPSL) model.
What is UPSL?
UPSL is a research-based intervention with which many students are already familiar through its use as a problem solving tool in many elementary schools and math texts. UPSL streamlines the six steps used by Big 6 and is easy to use. The AMHS science teachers introduced our students to UPSL and all teachers will begin using this strategy in all classrooms by the second quarter.
What Can Parents Do To Increase Their Child's Problem Solving Skills?
Talk with your child about problem solving.
Present them with situations where they have to use their problem solving skills.
Ask them about what they are doing in their classes to problem solve.
