Admission Checklist for the Department of Library and Information Sciences Master’s Program

If you have submitted a complete application and have not been contacted, please contact the Department's Main Office.

Step 1.  Apply to the University of North Texas Toulouse School of Graduate Studies:

  1. Apply to the UNT Toulouse School of Graduate Studies
    • You need to complete the Graduate School minimum qualifications before you will be considered for admission to the Department of Library and Information Sciences.  
    • International students should use the International Student application.
  2. Official transcripts from all colleges attended.

  3. Official scores on one of the following entrance exams:

Step 2.  Apply to the Department of Library & Information Sciences:

  1. Complete the Department’s Application which can be found at LIS Application (PDF format).  In order to complete the Department's Application, you should have already completed Step 1a above.

    • Students seeking any School Library Certification, Graduate Academic Certification, or Certificate of Advanced Studies will also need to complete the Department’s Application.

  2. In order to complete the Application you will need:

    • A statement stating your purpose and goals in applying to our program.  In your statement, include the nature of your interest, how you became interested in the field, your short– and long–term goals, the strengths that you would bring to the information profession, and how our program will help meet your career and educational objectives.

    • A resume of both your academic and professional careers.

    • Collecting the information above will help you quickly complete the Application.

  3. You must have three (3) letters of recommendation submitted for you.  Letters should be from former professors, or others, who can evaluate your academic qualification and from job supervisors who can assess your potential for success as an information professional.

    • Please print and fill out the top portion of the recommendation forms and give them to your recommenders, with pre–addressed stamped envelopes to the Department.

Step 3.  How will my Application be processed:

When all of the items above (Step 1 and Step 2) have been received, your application will be considered complete and a decision regarding your admission to our program for the following semester, or the semester you have requested, will be made.

  1. You will be contacted regarding your plans to enroll in the next available core course.

  2. You will be added on to our e-mail listserv through which you will receive regular information about your cohort and Web Institute.

  3. Being added to the e-mail listserv means that we are holding a place for you in the Web Institute, but you still need to register for the course and pay your fees.

  4. Those who have been added to the e-mail listserv will have first priority when registering for classes. Other students will be allowed to register as space permits or will be put on a waiting list.

  5. If your application is not complete, you will be notified in a letter of any outstanding items missing from your application.

  6. Once you have been accepted to the program, you will receive a letter that includes an assignment to an advisor based on your intended Program of Study.

  7. In order to register, you will need to fill out an online advising form and send it to your advisor.

  8. All new students (except School Librarianship Program of Study) begin the Master’s Program with the following courses: SLIS 5000 – Introduction to Information Professions, this course may be taken with either, or both, SLIS 5600 – Introduction to Information Access and Retrieval and/or SLIS 5200 – Introduction to Information Organization.  See the course descriptions in the Official UNT Graduate Catalog for more information.  Core courses, SLIS 5600 and SLIS 5200, can be taken in a Web Institute format (3 days and 4 days respectively), or in a traditional classroom setting.

  9. Admission into the Web Institutes are limited and completed applications will be considered on a first–come, first–served basis. It is recommended that prospective students apply for admission to the Web Institutes at least six months prior to the beginning of your proposed first semester, as Web Institutes normally fill at least three months prior to the start of the semester offered.

  10. All registration at UNT is done via the Internet using the UNT Student Portal, my.unt.edu. Through this portal, you can register for classes, view your schedule or tuition bill, and make fee payments. Also check the Registration and Schedule of Classes located at the UNT Registrar.

  11. You should verify that you have the minimum level of technology skills (reivew the Information Technology and Skills section of the department’s website for more information) and that your computer hardware and software is up–to–date.
