Micro-hydropower brings light to remote Afghan villages

Malay Ghalam Galani, the Daste Riwat school religious elder in Panjshayr province cuts the ribbon on micro-hydropower plant during a grand opening ceremony held May 21, 2009. Two hundred families from the village benefited from this U.S. Army Corps of Engineers project that built 105 micro-hydropower plants in seven of 34 Afghanistan provinces. The contract to install these units was awarded in late 2006 to Remote HydroLight and Advanced Engineering Associates International. The unit in Daste Riwat became operational in January 2009. The last unit in Parwan province is scheduled to be completed by July 2011.
