Micro-hydropower brings light to remote Afghan villages

Malay Ghalam Galani, the Daste Riwat school religious elder in Panjshayr conducts an interview with Army broadcaster Staff Sgt. Junious Stone, International Security Assistance Force Headquarters Public Affairs, May 21. Galani invited a dozen coalition members to join him and other village elders for lunch following their visit of the village's 1.7 kilometer canal and micro-hydropower plant which has been in operation since January 2009. The installation of the unit was part of a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers contract awarded in late 2006 to Remote HydroLight and Advanced Engineering Associates International to construct 105 units in seven of 34 Afghan provinces.
