Micro-hydropower brings light to remote Afghan villages

A skilled Afghan worker employed by Remote Hydrolight, conducts a private training workshop Dec. 15, 2008 in the village of Daste Riwat, Panjshayr province on how to monitor the amount of electricity being consumed. Two hundred families in the village benefited from this U.S. Army Corps of Engineers project that built 105 micro-hydropower plants in seven of 34 Afghanistan provinces. The contract to install these units was awarded in late 2006 to Remote HydroLight and Advanced Engineering Associates International. The unit in Daste Riwat became operational in January 2009. The last unit in Parwan province is scheduled to be completed by July 2011.
