Groundbreaking Ceremony Held for New MDA Facility at Redstone Arsenal

Army Lt. Gen. Patrick J. O’Reilly, Missile Defense Agency director, hosted a ground breaking ceremony today for the Von Braun IV facility at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Ala. The 225,000 square foot facility will house more than 850 employees.

MDA Space Tracking and Surveillance System Demonstrators (STSS-D) Marks 1,000 Days on Orbit

On June 21, 2012 the two Space Tracking and Surveillance System Demonstrators (STSS-D) satellites marked their 1,000th day on orbit. The two Missile Defense Agency satellites were launched into low earth orbit on a NASA Delta II launch vehicle from Cape Canaveral, Fla. on Sept. 25, 2009. Both satellites are operating nominally on-orbit under the control of the Missile Defense Space Development Center at Schriever Air Force Base, Colo., and continue to deliver an operational availability rate of over 99 percent.

Second-Generation Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense System Completes Second Successful Intercept Flight Test

The Missile Defense Agency (MDA) and U.S. Navy sailors in the USS LAKE ERIE (CG 70) successfully conducted a flight test of the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) system, resulting in the intercept of a separating ballistic missile target over the Pacific Ocean by the Navy’s newest missile defense interceptor missile, the Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) Block 1B.

Former Ballistic Missile Defense Organization (now the Missile Defense Agency) director Malcolm R. O’Neill (Lt. General, U.S. Army, Retired) is the recipient of the 2012 Ronald Reagan Missile Defense Award for his outstanding support and leadership of the United States’ ballistic missile defense program.
