The American Telemedicine Association (ATA) recently announced the publication of practice guidelines for the use of videoconferencing for the delivery of mental health services. These telemental guidelines are intended to:

  • Inform on the standard of care
  • Promote the development and practice of uniform, effective, safe and sustainable telemental health practices
  • Serve as both an operational reference and an educational tool

Dr. Jay H. Shore, co-author of the ATA practice guidelines, joins us for Telehealth Practice Guidelines: Videoconferencing and the Delivery of Mental Health Services. He will discuss the process used for developing the guidelines. Dr. Shore will review guidelines in the context of the current state of telemedicine and discuss future directions for the field.

Jay H. Shore, MD, MPH is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry, Centers for American Indian and Alaska Native Health, University of Colorado, Denver. He leads the Native Domain for the Western Region of the Department of Veterans Affairs, Office of Veterans Rural Health Resource Center. Dr. Shore has been a member of the American Telemedicine Association since 2000. He currently serves on the ATA Board of Directors, and is the vice-chair of the Tele-mental Health Special Interest Group.
