    WATERVLIET ARSENAL, N.Y. -- In the Town of Nassau, N.Y., on Oct. 14, Staff Sgt. Derek Farley began greeting each visitor as they entered and left this small town. Derek was an Army explosives ordnance disposal expert who was killed in Afghanistan on Aug. 17, 2010, but on Sunday, the Route 20 Bridge in Nassau was named the Staff Sergeant Derek Farley Memorial Bridge.

The U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) defines a levee as a "man-made structure, usually an earthen embankment, designed and constructed in accordance with sound engineering practices to contain, control, or divert the flow of water so as to provide protection from temporary flooding." The terms dike and levee are sometimes used interchangeably. Examples of levee systems in the Houston area are the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers-constructed Texas City and Vicinity Hurricane Protection System, Freeport and Vicinity Hurricane Protection System, the Port Arthur and Vicinity Hurricane Protection System and the locally constructed levee systems in Fort Bend County.

    JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Under a dark Jacksonville sky, a large TraPac vessel approached the harbor a bit too late for high tide, carrying heavy containers of imported goods. Dark skies turned to heavy rains, and the ship had to endure the winds and rain overnight, waiting for the next high tide to rise enough to cross where the St. Johns River and the Intracoastal Waterway meet. In this area, called Mile Point, heavy crosscurrents prevent large ships from coming into the Jacksonville Port nearly two-thirds of the day. To address this problem, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District partnered with the Jacksonville Port Authority (JAXPORT) to conduct a study.
