Concerts on the Avenue

MU1 Sarah L. TietsortThe Concerts on the Avenue series, featuring the United States Navy Band and Navy Ceremonial Guard, is presented on select Tuesday evenings at 8 p.m. during the summer at the U.S. Navy Memorial in Washington, D.C.  Combining a wide variety of music in addition to precision drill by the Ceremonial Guard, the concert series began in 1997.

This year’s series features a diverse array of music, from Rihanna to Styx, and Glenn Miller to John Philip Sousa.  With musicians from the Concert Band, Sea Chanters and Cruisers, the Navy Band takes the audience on an entertaining journey commemorating the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812, the 70th anniversary of the WAVES, the 50th anniversary of the Navy SEALs and highlighting the Navy’s humanitarian efforts.

Following the presentation of the state and territorial flags of the United States by the Navy Ceremonial Guard, the Navy Drill Team executes their flawless demonstration of close order drill, coordination and timing.  The Drill Team Sailors carry 1903 Springfield rifles, all with 10-inch fixed bayonets.

The 2012 Concerts on the Avenue series will be held at the Navy Memorial on June 12, June 26, July 24, July 31, August 14 and August 28.  The Navy Memorial is located on Pennsylvania Ave. NW in Washington, D.C., between 7th St. NW and 9th St. NW.
