We remember. Eleven years ago we lost almost 3000 souls on this day. To those victims and victims families we offer our U.S. Navy hymn.- During the War of 1812, the Great Lakes were of strategic importance to both the British and to the U.S. The U.S. Navy fought valiantly to defending the entire Ohio Valley while simultaneously keeping open the possibility of invading Canada. On this day in 1813, a certain U.S. Navy Commodore famously said "We have met the enemy and they are ours..." Name the Commodore, the battle he is referring to, and the General, who eventually became President of the United States, he said these words to. No cheating, now! We'll drop some hints if need be.

The Negro spiritual "Wade in De Water" was said to have been sung by Harriet Tubman as she led escaping slaves to freedom.
