Wind energy at Cape Cod to save $1 million a year
TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. (AFNS) -- The wind in Cape Cod, Mass., is about to be called into action once again to reduce energy costs and air pollution at the Massachusetts Military Reservation. Air Force Space Command is preparing to install two 1.6 megawatt utility-scale wind turbines at the station's early warning radar site, called PAVE Phased Array Warning System.
Large solar array planned for Davis-Monthan AFB
TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. (AFNS) -- The Air Force plans to expand its renewable energy portfolio substantially with a 14.5-megawatt photovoltaic solar array at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Ariz. The base has entered into an agreement with SunEdison, LLC to design, finance, build, operate and maintain the array on 170 acres of underutilized base property. Construction will begin soon with completion planned for no later than December 2012.

Air Force awards massive energy-saving project at Tinker
TINKER AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. (AFNS) -- Air Force leaders awarded an Energy Savings Performance Contract (ESPC) on Aug. 1. The project is a joint effort between Tinker AFB, Honeywell, the Department of Energy, Headquarters Air Force Materiel Command and the Air Force Civil Engineer Support Agency. The ESPC will improve energy efficiencies for 70 buildings, some dating to the 1940s, and save enough energy to power 12,424 average homes a year.

EPA recognizes Hanscom office building for energy efficiency
HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. (AFNS) -- Hanscom Air Force Base's newest office building earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's ENERGY STAR certification May 31. The certificate signifies that Building 1604 performs in the top 25 percent of similar facilities nationwide for energy efficiency and meets strict energy efficiency performance levels set by the EPA.
