Command Sgt. Maj. Jeffrey S. Hartless was born in Lynchburg, Va., and graduated from Amherst County High School in 1981. He entered the U.S. Army in April, 1983, completing Basic Training, Advanced Individual Training and Airborne School at Fort Benning, Ga.

During his 29 years of service, Command Sgt. Maj. Hartless has held leadership positions as Section Leader, Squad Leader, Weapons Platoon Sergeant, Rifle Platoon Sergeant, Ranger Instructor Platoon Trainer, First Sergeant, Brigade Operations Sergeant Major, and Battalion Sergeant Major, Garrison Command Sergeant Major, and Brigade Command Sergeant Major.

His assignments include: 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment; 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment; 5th Ranger Training Battalion; 3rd Battalion, Special Operations Aviation Regiment; 2nd Battalion, 187th Infantry, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault); Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 173d Airborne Brigade; 2nd Battalion, Airborne, 503rd Infantry; United States Army Garrison, Fort Polk; Warrior Transition Brigade, Walter Reed Army Medical Center; and United States Army Garrison Vicenza, Italy. He has completed multiple combat tours.

His Military education includes: the Primary Leadership Course, the Basic Noncommissioned Officer Course, the Advanced Noncommissioned Officer Course, the U.S. Army Ranger School, Airborne School, Pathfinder School, the Air Assault Course, Survival, Evasion, Escape and Resistance High Risk Course, Jumpmaster School, Instructor Training Course, the Jungle Warfare Course, The Advanced Demolition Course, Class 52 of the United States Army Sergeant Majors Academy, and the Garrison Sergeant Major Course.

He has an Associate's Degree in Applied Science of Business from Excelsior College.
