9-12 FEBRUARY, ST. LOUIS, MO.  The Air Force Men and Women teams ran away with the team gold medals at the 2012 Armed Forces Cross Country Championship, ran in conjunction with the USA Track and Field Winter National Cross Country Championship.

On a brisk winter’s day, teams from across the Services ran in the annual championship.  CPT Kelly Calway (Army- Ft. Carson, CO) captured the women’s Armed Forces title with a time of 28:59.6 in the Women’s 8k division.  On the men’s side, 1st Lt Matthew Williams (Air Force - Peterson AFB, CO) with a time of 36:57.6 in the Men’s 12k division.

The Army placed second in both men’s and women’s team events.  Overall team scoring is determined by displacement scoring on each runner’s finish.  Overall standings include:

 Note: The Armed Forces Cross Country Team will participate in the 54th CISM World Military Cross Country Championship, 8-12 March 2010 in Ostend, Belgium. Competitors were selected based on performance and availability. Special thanks to Mr. Steve Brown, Chief of Air Force Sports for coordinating this program.

The Air Force Men’s and Women’s Teams won the 2009 Armed Forces Cross Country Championship, conducted in conjunction with USA Track & Field’s Winter Classic at the Agricultural History Farm Park, Derwood, Maryland, on 7 February.  The Air Force won the Armed Forces Women’s 8-Kilometer Cross Country Championship.  Second Lieutenant Caroline White (AFIT, ROTC at the University of Maryland) won the Armed Forces individual with a time of 30:14 (27th in the nation).  The Navy’s Aidan Van Cleef finished second (30:29), while Airman First Class Angela Martell (Peterson AFB) was third with a time of 31:04.  The Air Force totaled eight points with a first place individual finish, a third place and Major Brenda Schrank’s (Andrews AFB) fourth place finish (31:21).  The team championship was determined by adding the placement finishes of the team’s top three runners.  The Navy finished second (16 points), the Army finished third (25 points), and the Marine Corps finished fourth (41 points).

The Armed Forces Men’s 12-Kilometer Championship was exceedingly close.  The Navy started off very strong when Will Christian (38:42) and Aaron Lanzel (39;32) finished first and second in the Armed Forces Championship.  Christian’s time was good for 31st in the nation.  The Air Force came on strong, logging in the next four finishers in the Armed Forces event.  Captain Levi Severson (SMC/ISS, Boulder, Colorado) was third (40:10), Captain Jacob Johnson (Little Rock AFB, time of 40:45) was fourth, Captain Benjamin Payne (Columbus AFB, time of 41:03 was fifth, and Captain Jason Schlarb (Peterson AFB, time of 41:09) was sixth.  The event was decided when Payne and Schlarb sprinted across the finish line just ahead of the Navy’s Tim Fahey (41:12).  The Air Force totaled 18 points (top four runner placements), with the Navy’s 19 points very close behind.  The Marine Corps was third (54 points) and Army fourth (59 points).
