(Washington, DC – Steven Dinote, Armed Forces Sports)  U.S. Army 1LT Charles Ware won the 36th Marine Corps Marathon with a time of 2:19:16, the best time since 1997.
 

On a cold Sunday morning with traces of snow on the ground from the night before, the Marine Corps Marathon kicked off its 36th event in Washington, DC and hosted the 2011 Armed Forces Championship within the race.
 

The Marine Corps Marathon has served as the host of the Armed Forces Marathon Championship since 1998.
 

In the Women’s Division, Air Force’s A1C Emily Shertzer placed second overall with a time of 2:45:55.
 

The Army took the overall Men’s title with a combined score of 10:01:11, with the Air Force Women taking gold with a combined time of 5:40:25.  Scores are determined from the top 4 men and top two women in each division.  Full results are below.

Belgrade Marathon, the 42nd CISM Military World Marathon Championship
 
Within the organization of this year’s Belgrade Marathon, the 42nd CISM Military World Marathon Championship (International Military Sports Council CISM – 140 nation-members) was held.  The CISM Marathon was hosted by the Ministry of Defense, Serbian Army GS Headquarter and Military Academy.  A total of 91 men and 18 women participated in the CISM Marathon Championship. A total of 318 runners started the race. Twenty-four nations were in attendance: Albania, Algeria, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Canada, Croatia, Ecuador, Macedonia, Germany, Hungary, Lebanon, Lithuania, Malta, Morocco, Netherlands, Poland, Qatar, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, and the United States.  The competition was conducted in Belgrade, Serbia on April 18, 2009.

The competition took place inside the “Maratona d’Italia”.   Runners from 25 CISM nations (81 men and 15 women) were among the more than 8000 marathon competitors.  Poland’s Adam Draczynski and Italy’s Rosalba Console respectively won the men’s and women’s individual competition. Poland also took first place in the men’s team competition and was followed by Italy and Qatar. This was an extraordinary day of sport and friendship!
