2011 ARMED FORCES GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP UPDATE

30 September 2011
By Steven Dinote, Armed Forces Sports

softball 1   NAS Pensacola, FL. With clouds on the horizon, the threat of rain caused much concern to the final day of the Armed Forces Championship. Both Navy and
Marine Corps Men/Women teams were able to get their final game in, but heavy rain forced the much
anticipated Air Force/Army matchup on hold. After three hours of heavy rain, the clouds passed and left the fields soaked.

Prior to the storm, the Navy Women and Marines took the field in their final competition. After a remarkable rally that nearly resulted in a win over the Army the night before, the Marines were unable to fend off the Navy bats as Navy outshined the Marines 11-6. As the clouds slowly crept in, the Marine Corps and Navy men took the field in their final contest. The Marines’ bats were hot and furious as they took a commanding lead into the fourth inning. At the conclusion of the fourth inning, the game was stopped short due to the run-rule as the Marines won their final game 21-1.

Alas, the clouds grew darker over the fields of NAS Pensacola. In the previous three years, the tournament was spared of any rain delay. But sad to see the final day of play, Mother Nature opened up and caused a three hour delay. Once the rain passed, the NAS Pensacola Sports staff diligently moved to get the games ready for play. With the Women’s Tournament already decided after day four, the decision was made to cancel the final Air Force/Army game. However, the Air Force and Army Men’s game was the deciding factor in who walked away with gold.   Softball 2

Looking to stop the Airmen in their run for a three-peat, the Army took early leads and maintained control of the game through the late innings. The Air Force continued to fight and tied the game in the seventh inning to force extra innings. The Army added three runs to cushion their lead during the top of the eighth inning. With the Air Force facing two outs with two runners in scoring position, Air Force’s Kiel Kauffeld of Misawa Air Base, Japan stepped to the plate. With only three hits all tournament, Kauffeld sent the ball screaming over the fence and evened up the score.

With homeruns to spare, Wyoming Air National Guard Staff Sgt. Travis Wollison sent the ball over the fence once again in a solo shot that ended the tournament giving the Air Force their third gold medal in a row. Air Force wins 20-19. The 2011 Armed Forces Softball Championship saw amazing plays, come-frombehind victories, and heartbreak. Air Force Men and Women captured the gold and the Army Men and Women took the silver. The 2011 Championship marked the last year being held at NAS Pensacola, FL. Army will host the 2012 Championship for the next two years.

Day 4

Man Hitting Ball

Fourth day of action surrounds the field of play, as the 2011
Armed Forces Softball Championship enters the final round of the triple round robin tournament. Unexpected victories, extra
innings, and heavy bats were the prime feature of today’s event.

After a 30 minute delay due to a soggy field, the Army Men stepped up to the plate with big bats blazing. Avery continued his home run lead scoring a grand slam over the Navy. Navy was unable to find their momentum and fell to the Army 23-12.

The first Women’s matchup features the Army and Navy, with the Army taking the first two contests. The Navy Women were looking to stay in the running for silver, but Army had different plans. Army wins 11-0.

Air Force Men were looking to cruise to their “three-peat”, with two wins over the Marine Corps in the first two rounds. Air Force rocked the Marines with heavy bats, but soon reached their homerun limit. The Marines scrapped their way back with six and seven inning rallies. Also at their limit, the Marines relied on their speed and base hitting to rally past the Airmen 19-18 in the bottom of the 7th.

During the third matchup between the Air Force and Marine Corps Women, Air Force continued their momentum. The Marines were only able to tally one run. Air Force win 12-1.

After recovering from their loss against the Marines, Air Force Men dominated the third game of the series between the Navy. The Air Force ended the game early with an 18-2 victory.

Air Force Women needed a win to wrap up the gold medal with a victory over the Navy. And that they did. Air Forces clinch the gold medal with their win over the Navy 6-1.

With the silver medal still in sight for the Marine Corps Men, the game of the evening featured a hard fought between against the Army. With a surprise victory over the Air Force, the Marines continued to fight and forced the tournament’s first extra innings. The Army surmounted an eight run lead in the top of the 8th, but the Marines didn’t stop swinging. With runners in scoring position and the momentum on their side, an unexpected stoppage in play to confirm the score possibly wiped out the momentum as the Marines popped out to end the game. Army wins 19-17 in the 8th. The Army is still in contention for the Gold Medal as Soldiers and Airmen face off in the rubber match.

Unable to gain momentum throughout the tournament, the Marine Corps Women easily could have given up. But their fighting spirit was evident as the Marines’ bats woke up as they put more runs on the board than any other game throughout the tournament. With the game in reach, base running miscues held up runners on the bases. With the game tied, bases loaded, and the count 3 balls/1 strike; the Marines went for the hit rather than sit back. The result was a pop-fly to end the inning and pushed the second consecutive game into extra innings. Realizing the break they were given, the Army went on an unrelenting scoring spree racking up 8 runs in the 8th. The Marine Corps was unable to repeat their earlier magic and ended the game losing to the Army 14-6.

Thursday will mark the end of the 2011 Armed Forces Championship, as the Navy Men and Women face the Marines. In the Closing series, Air Force will face the Army. While the Air Force Women have wrapped up the Gold, the Men’s matchup will decide who walks away with title.

Games begin at 1000, 22 September.

Day 3

Man Hitting Ball

As the tournament enters its third day, more surprises and exciting ends kept the 2011 Armed Forces Softball Championship up for grabs.

The day started off with the undefeated Air Force Women facing an eager Navy team.  With only one win under their belt, the Navy Women stepped up to the challenge and issued Air Force their first loss of the tournament.  Navy 9 – Air Force 5.

After a late rally in their first matchup, the Air Force Men entered their showdown with Navy in hopes to continue the momentum for a run at a “three-peat”.  While the Navy was eager to redeem themselves, they were unable to overcome the Air Force’s lead.  Final score, Air Force 23 – Navy 15.

Army Women hot off their 7th inning rally over the Navy the night before came out swinging against the Marines.  Army’s Trina McGee put the first Women’s home run over the fence of the tournament.  Army dominates in their 19-1 triumph over the Marines.

Following the Army Women, the Men came out swinging as well.  The Army Men shut down the Marines in a 24-12 victory.

During the Marine Corps’ second game of the day, the Navy Women hit the ball just as hard and stopped the Marines 15-5.

After a touch loss to the Army during their first game of day three, the Marines refused to quit against the Navy Men.  The lead shifted several times, but the Marines came out on top over the Navy.  Final score, Marine Corps 25 – Navy 22.

After an exciting victory over the Navy the night before and a huge win over the Marines earlier in the day, the Army Women faced an Air Force team that was issued their first loss of the tournament…and they were not happy.  Air Force played tough on both sides of the ball and shut the Army down 15-5.

Down to the wire.  At the bottom of the 6th inning, the score was tied at 18-a-piece.  The Army Men were able to muster one extra run in the top of the 7th, but the Air Force answered with back-to-back homers to end the game in an exciting finish to day three.  Air Force 20, Army 19.

Day 2

Man Hitting Ball

Sure wins were not to be found on Day Two of competition of the 2011 Armed Forces Men’s and Women’s Softball Championship.

Navy Men opened up the second day of competition with a 20-18 victory over the Marine Corps.  During the top of the 7th, the Marines began to rally until the Navy defense force a double play and closed out the game with a fly ball.

During the Women’s matchup between the Navy and Marine Corps, Navy was able to get one in the win column after a disappointing 7th inning rally by the Air Force the night before.  Navy defense head the Marines scoreless and finished the game 6-0.

After a disappointing loss to the Marines the night before, Army Men brought their bats against the Air Force in hopes to spoil their “three-peat” efforts.  Army’s Turlington and Avery combined for a total of 15 RBIs.  Army beat the Air Force 31-27.

In a battle to stay undefeated, the Air Force women issued Army’s first loss playing solid defense.  Army was unable to get on the scoreboard until the 6th inning.  However, Air Force defense was too strong and prevented any last minute comebacks.  Air Force 6, Army 2.

After holding the Marines in a close game, Navy Men came out swinging and jumping to a 19-2 lead over the Army.  The Army stepped up to the plate at the bottom of the 4th inning and gained five runs.  After another two in the 5th, Army pounded out run after run in the 6th inning for a total of 11 and gaining the lead over the Navy.  After a promising line drive single by Navy’s Grounds, the Army defense went on high alert and retired the next three batters to win the game 20-19.

When all thought the excitement was over, Navy Women played solid ball holding a steady 5-2 lead into the bottom of the 7th inning.  Army bats woke up and started cutting the lead piece by piece.  With runners in scoring position, Army’s MeGee roped a line drive into center field scoring Flory from 2nd Base.  Army defeats Navy 6-5.

In the final Men’s matchup, The Air Force overpowered the Marines.  Air Force’s Campbell went yard on a three-run HR and forced the game to end in the 5th as the 15-run-rule took effect.  Air Force defeat the Marines 22-5.

The final game of the evening paired the Air Force Women and Marines.  Air Force Women continued their undefeated streak and followed their male counterparts and ended the game early over the Marines with an 18 – 2 victory.

Day Two Standings:

Women:
USAF    4 - 0
Army     3 - 1
Navy     1 - 3
USMC  0 - 4

Men:
Army    3 - 1
USAF   3 - 1
Navy    1 - 3
USMC 1 - 3

Day 1

Man Hitting Ball

In the Florida “pan-handle”, Naval Air Station Pensacola hosts the 2011 Armed Forces Men’s and Women’s Softball Championship.  This marks the fourth year the championship has been held at Pensacola.  After the opening ceremony and first pitch, it was down to business as the teams entered the triple round robin tournament.  Day one brought both explosive offensive games as well as tight defensive showdowns.

The first game featured host Navy Women against the Army Women.  The Navy was able to out-hit the army, but was only able to bring in 2 runs.  Army’s Russell was solid going 2-3, rounding the bases twice and 1 RBI.  Final Score, Army 7 – Navy 2

Next, Army Men followed the Women with a victory over the Navy Men.  Navy attempted two late rallies, but the Army was able to withstand Navy Ground’s performance (5-5, 4 Runs, 5 RBIs, 2 HRs).  Army’s Dochwat answered with a solid performance of his own placing the ball anywhere he wanted (5-5, 4 Runs, 6 RBIs, 2 HRs).  Final Score, Army 26 – Navy 21

The next series featured Air Force versus Marine Corps.  The Air Force Women shutout the Marines 11-0, allowing only two hits from the Devil Dogs.  Air Force’s Washington went 2-3, with 3 runs, 3 RBIs, and 1 HR.

In a shootout, both the Air Force and Marine Corps Men’s teams reached the homerun limit.  Air Force’s Patrick hit at will going 5-5, with 5 runs, 6 RBIs, and two HRs.  The Marines did not go down quietly, as USMC’s Spradlin answered with a 3-5 performance, pulling in 4 runs, 5 RBIs, and two homeruns of his own.  Final outcome, Air Force 31 – Marine Corps 21.

Man Hitting Ball

As the Army Women hope to repeat as Champions, they stopped the Marines 13-3 in their second game of the day.  Army finished the day with 2 wins and no loses.

In the battle between Army Men and Marine Corps Men, the Marines held the lead most of the game.  Air Force was able to rally in the 6th inning, but the Marines answered with a 7th inning rally of their own.  The Marine’s Spradlin was unstoppable going 5 for 5, 5 Runs, 8 RBIs, and 2 HRs.  Army’s Avery was not only unstoppable in his own right, he was overpowering.  Avery was 5 for 5, rounding the bases 4 times, pulling in 12 RBIs along with 4 HRs.  However, the Marines were able to put the brakes on the Army in the 7th to hold on to their late rally lead.  Final score, USMC 22 – Army 21.

In one of the tightest defensive shows, Navy and Air Force Women fought tooth and nail to get runs on the board.  With a 3-1 lead into the 7th inning and two outs; Air Force was able to tie the game before calling for Dought to pinch hit.  With the game tied, Doughty smacked a line drive into center field bringing in the winning score and ending the game.  Final outcome, Air Force 4 – Navy 3.

Following the Women’s defensive show, the Men’s matchup between the Air Force and Navy were equally exciting.  Navy’s Neeley led the team going 3-4 with two runs and a homerun.  However, it was Patrick pulling in another solid performance (4-4, 4 Runs, 6 RBIs, 2 HRs) for the Air Force as the Airmen rallied in the 6th inning with Patrick hitting the game-winning homerun.  Navy was shutdown in the 7th as the Air Force came one step closer to a “three-peat”.  Final score, Air Force 14 – Navy 11.

Day One Standings:

WOMEN’S OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP
“ANOTHER SECOND PLACE FINISH FOR ARMED FORCES WOMEN"
For the second straight year the Armed Forces Women’s Softball Team had to settle for second place in the ASA Women’s Open Softball Championship. In 2008, the team lost a 6-5 “If Necessary Game” heart-breaker to team named “Hawks/Miss Kitty”. This year’s nemesis was team from Tallahassee, FL named “Enough Said”.  Unbeaten “Enough Said” did all the talking with their bats as they outscored tournament opponents 84-18. Twenty–four of those runs came in a 24-6 drubbing of Armed Forces in the Championship Game. Armed Forces was within a few runs of the lead when “Enough Said” exploded with 17 fourth inning runs. That was the final Championship Game conversation.  “Enough Said” defeated Armed Forces 13-5 earlier in the winner’s bracket finals. Six teams participated in this double elimination showdown. “Enough Said’s” Head Coach Ian Houston said: “We appreciate the Armed Forces. They are a good softball team. We appreciate what they do for our country in terms of protecting our walls so no matter what the story is and what the outcome of the game is, we always hold them in our hearts and keep them in our prayers because they’re taking care of us.”

NAS Pensacola, FL -- After a slow start, the Air Forces Men’s Softball Team went on to dethrone the Army in the 2009 Armed Forces Men’s Softball Championship. Both teams finished the Championship with identical 7-2 records, however; two one-sided Air Force victories over the Army in the two final rounds gave the “Men in Blue” the edge in the Championship tie-breaker. After blasting the Marine Corps 18-3 in their opening game, the Air Forces dropped back-to-back contests to the Army (18-17) and the Navy (37-16).  With hot bats and outstanding defense, the Air Force easily defeated all opponents in their final six games. Staff Sergeant Joshua Wiggs (Tyndall AFB, FL) powered the Air Forces with 13 home runs, tying him with Amy Sergeant Dexter Avery (Ft Huachuca, AZ) who also had a Championship leading 13 home runs. Technical Sergeant Zachariah Turissini (Tyndall AFB, FL) helped the cause with 26 RBI’s. The Army won the Armed Forces Men’s Softball Championship in 2007 and 2008.

The situation was a little more complicated on the women’s side.  The Air Force, Navy, and Army all finished with identical 6-3 records. In the end the, it was the Air Force winning gold based on the total runs tie-breaker. The Army finished second and the Navy had to settle for third.  All eyes were on Navy earlier in the championship after they won their first four games.  Coach Cheryl Trapnell and the “Sky Ladies” kept their poise after dropping back-to-back games early in the Championship to the Navy and Army. Following the two set-backs, the Air Force went on a four game win streak before falling to the Army 6-5 in their final game.  Staff Sergeant Katherine Braun (Offutt AFB, NE) and Staff Sergeant Lindsey Ciullo (Ramstein AFB, Germany) batted .448 and .438 respectively and led the Air Forces to victory.  Both players were voted on to the All Tournament and All Armed Forces teams.

All-Army outfielder Avery to play for Team USA
in Border Battle with Canada

By Tim Hipps
FMWRC Public Affairs

ALEXANDRIA, Va. – Sgt. 1st Class Dexter Avery has been selected to play for Team USA in the 2009 Border Battle, a slow-pitch softball game between the United States and Canada.

Avery, 38, of Fort Huachuca, Ariz., will be rewarded July 18 for a decade of All-Army Softball excellence during the 4th World Cup of Softball at the Amateur Softball Association’s Hall of Fame Complex in Oklahoma City.
“Excitement beyond words,” Avery said of being named to the 15-man U.S. roster. “It’s just a privilege to be able to move up the ladder from playing backyard ball, to playing organized ball in high school and college, and then get to play on one of the highest levels that softball has to offer.

“In softball, I don’t think you can get any higher than this. When you are asked to play with the best players at that level and you get a chance to play with them against guys from another country and you’re representing the U.S., I don’t think you can get any bigger than that. I’m just ecstatic.”

All-Air Force coach Steve “Pup” Shortland of Randolph Air Force Base, Texas, will coach Team USA for the game that will be televised by ESPN.

Avery, an outfielder who hits with power, has
All Army 2009

maintained a batting average in the 700s while representing Fort Hood, Texas; Yongsan Garrison and Camp Carroll, South Korea; and Fort Huachuca throughout a decade of All-Army and All-Armed Forces softball.

He helped All-Army teams win the Armed Forces Championship for times. He was selected eight times for the All-Armed Forces Team that advanced to play in the ASA National Championship Tournament, and he was named to the Armed Forces All-Tourney Team seven times.
Avery, however, does not play softball for accolades, titles or trophies.

“When you love to play the game, most people see that in you,” he explained. “And when you respect the game, I think they see that even more.”

Championships and kudos, Avery contends, do not rank in the same ballpark as the jokes, the laughter, the heartaches, the pain and the camaraderie derived from competing in military softball tryout camps and tournaments.

“Of all the tournaments I’ve played in, I think the Armed Forces Tournament is the most nerve-racking,” he explained. “My first year in ’97, I think that was the most nervous I’ve ever been to play a game because it’s so built up around ‘you need to do this, you need to be your best at this, nobody’s going to give you nothing and everybody is going to be after you.’

“And when you get there, that’s exactly how it is. Nothing is given to you. You know how it is when you play on the upper level, all those guys want to do pretty much is hit. But on the Armed Forces level, everybody is playing defense. If you get a hit, you earn it. There is none of that, ‘I’m going to let it go through the hole because I don’t think I can get to it.’ People are diving and going all-out, nonstop. It’s one of the hardest tournaments and one of the most enjoyable tournaments I play in every year. It makes you a better person and a better player because the camaraderie between the guys is so tight because being together for almost a whole month you get to know each other in and out – what buttons to push, what buttons not to push, how to get a person to play better, and how to get a person to relax. It’s a big brotherhood.

“And when all the teams come together, it’s just a joy. We get to see old faces we haven’t seen in a long time and I just love it. To play with the best of the best, you really get to see what you’re made of.”

Avery, a 6-foot-3-inch, 240-pounder who averages 12-15 homers per tournament, plays left-center field for the All-Army Team and left field for the All-Armed Forces squad. Not gifted with blazing speed for an outfielder, he compensates by getting a good read and jump on the ball. Although not flashy, his arm is solid. And his glove was deemed golden in 1998 by a civilian league in which he played shortstop while stationed at Fort Hood.

“I’m not one to talk about my athletic ability. I like to let it speak for itself,” Avery said. “But I think the most important thing, probably, was being consistent at what I was doing. Another major thing was attitude – never being a disrespecting player, always giving everybody their props, always wanting to win.

“I always gave it everything I had. No matter how tired I was or what was going on, I was always there to win. If we were up 20 runs or down 20 runs, I still maintained the same mentality about the game – and just having that drive to continue to try to get better every year.”

A native of Decatur, Ga., Avery played football, basketball and baseball for Monticello High School in Jasper County, Ga. After playing two seasons of basketball at Patrick Henry State Junior College in Monroeville, Ala., he played two seasons of baseball at Columbus State University. He then served three years as athletic director for the Boys & Girls Club of America in Columbus, Ga., before enlisting in the Army, which opened the door for his globetrotting softball career.

“I originally planned on only being in for probably four years, but I liked it, I enjoyed it,” Avery said. “I enjoyed being around Soldiers, so I stayed in.”

Avery firmly believes in the adage that it’s not whether you win or lose, but more importantly, how you play the game.

“It doesn’t matter how you finish,” he said. “It’s how you compete with those guys. Everybody wants to win. Nobody wants to lose. But we go there as the underdogs from the beginning and we always have people on our side that played on other teams.  They always come up to us and thank us for representing the United States Army, Marines, Air Force and the Navy. They tell us that they really appreciate that we give them the chance to play the game they love. Just being around that and seeing that, you try to give back to it as much as you can.”

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Coming from the loser’s bracket, Hawks/Miss Kitty’s captured the 2008 Women’s Open National Championship in a 6 -5 walk-off decision over the Armed Forces.  It was a long day for the winning team as they played five games tallying a 4-1 record.  The Hawks forced the “if” game five when they skunked Armed Forces 10-0 in game four.  In the final championship win, the Hawks were led by catcher and tournament MVP Sirene Johnson who led the way going 2-for-4 in the final game with three RBI.  Armed Forces put up a great fight with four batters each contributing two hits.  But they couldn’t hold the lead as Hawks/Miss Kitty’s scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh for the eventual walk-off win.

2008 Armed Forces Men’s and Women’s Softball Championship - Army Men, Air Force Women Take Home Gold’s

By AN Daniel Nichols

2008 Armed Forces Women’s Softball Champs – Air Force

Army men and Air Force women softball teams held strong through the competition to clinch gold medals at the 2008 Armed Forces Softball Championship which took place onboard Naval Air Station Pensacola, Sept. 14-18, at the Barrancas Softball Fields.

It was an exciting tournament where “every team looked strong at the beginning but the Army men and Air Force women held it together better,” said Morale, Welfare and Recreation Supervisory Sports Specialist, John J. Russo.

“The women’s teams were tied at one point then the Air Force put together some one-run games and broke it open,” said Russo.

The battle for gold was hard fought on the men’s side as well, “The Air Force men looked dominant but blew three key games where they had leads,” said Armed Forces Sports Deputy Secretariat Kenneth Polk.

This left the field open for the defending champions, Army men, to clinch this year’s title also.

Diaz Picture Wilson Picture

The tournament was a round-robin format in which each team played each other in three rounds, for a total of nine games. The team with the best record after all three rounds was awarded gold medals and declared champions.

Players from both the both championships were selected, based on performance and availability, to play on the women’s or men’s All-Armed Forces team which will participate in the Amateur Softball Association’s National Championships in Oklahoma City, Okla. Sept. 25-28.

The players’ season only lasts a few weeks. Each Service team starts the season with a three-week trial camp to prepare for the Armed Forces Softball Championship. Selected players from the Armed forces Championship players then compete in the National Softball Championships. Despite the short season, the games are taken very seriously and the players are competitive.

“The players are very competitive and professional,” said Russo. You can’t be best buds with a pitcher while trying to hit a homerun off him, said Russo. Overall, Russo says “the tournament went great.”

Soldiers Dethrone Air Force for Armed Forces Men’s Softball Championship

EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. – The All-Army team spoiled All-Air Force’s bid for a fourth consecutive championship by capturing the gold medal at the Armed Forces Men’s Softball Championship tournament Sept. 12-14.

The All-Army team claimed its first Armed Forces men’s softball title since 2003 – and sixth overall – with six victories and two losses. The All-Marine Corps team finished second with a 6-3 record.

“Any team can beat any team at any given time,” said All-Army coach Command Sgt. Maj. Victor Rivera of Fort Drum, N.Y. “My strategy is to beat everyone at least twice.”

The three-day, round-robin tournament featured hand-picked players from around the Air Force, Army, Marine Corps and Navy. Each team played nine games.

The All-Army team, with only three rookies, relied on the experience of 12 veterans. After losing 20-8 in their tournament opener to the All-Marine Corps squad, the Soldiers made adjustments and dropped only one game to All-Air Force the rest of the way.

“Not only did we win it for ourselves, we won it for our units, divisions, and most importantly, the Army,” Rivera said. “We can brag for the next year we are the softball champs.”

Three-time defending champion All-Air Force had just one win before defeating Navy, 18-9, in the final game of the second day of the tourney. They entered the final day needing to sweep all three services. They beat All-Army in a defensive battle, 5-2, and shut out All-Navy, 15-0, but couldn’t hold off the All-Marine Corps squad, losing 9-5 in what amounted to the silver-medal game.

“In this tournament, you have to come to play every single game as if it were the championship game,” said All-Air Force first baseman Josh Wiggs of Keesler Air Force Base, Miss. “Every game counts.”

In his bid for a fourth consecutive crown, All-Air Force coach Stephen Shortland assembled a squad of three All-Americans and nine gold medal carrying veterans.

“We just didn’t hit,” Shortland said. “You have to put the pedal to the medal every pitch of every out of every inning of every game to win this tournament. It is what it is. It’s disappointing to know that we had so much talent on the field and couldn’t get it done.”

The Soldiers got it done with their bats. Five of the top 10 hitters in the tourney hailed from the All-Army squad. Mason Elmer led the way with a .700 batting average, including 21 hits and 12 RBI.

All-Army’s Dexter Avery and All-Air Force veteran Joshua Wiggs had a tournament-high five home runs. Wiggs also had a tourney-high 23 RBI.

“The teams keep getting stronger and stronger,” said All-Army utility player Mike Dochwat of Fort Campbell, Ky. “The services bring more dedicated players that sacrifice their egos for championships.”

After the tournament, the coaches selected an All-Armed Forces Men’s Softball Team that will represent the U.S. military at the Amateur Softball Association Class A National Championships Sept. 29-30 in Oklahoma City.
