DALLAS—Twenty students at the University of North Texas at Dallas got a steak dinner and a few lessons in business etiquette Oct. 2.

The university’s Student Development Office offered a workshop on resume writing, networking and dressing for success in preparation for a career expo at UNT Dallas Oct. 20. The workshop included a formal, three-course dinner catered by Cadillac Cantina.

Greta Davis, a master career counselor, led a discussion about dining etiquette and general business etiquette while students enjoyed steak and potatoes. Davis works as a career counselor, executive coach and consultant for the federal government and has extensive experience coordinating personal and career counseling services and other student support services in higher education settings.

“We presented the workshop and etiquette lunch to prepare students for our upcoming career expo and for life after college,” said Student Services Coordinator Jessica Recht, who organized the event. “Workshops like this are important because they consist of things that the students probably won’t learn in the classroom but are as important as academics in real life.”

Students were told that employers look not only for good grades and work experience, but also for “soft skills” such as communication and social skills. The workshop provided students the opportunity to learn and ask questions about these areas to make themselves more marketable to employers, Recht said.
