    Counselor for Press and Culture Lisa Helling officially opened an exhibition of photographs of American Jazz legends taken during their concerts in Poland by renowned Polish photographer Marek Karewicz. The opening took place on December 16th at the American Corner in Gdansk.

    The U.S. Embassy in Warsaw is happy to announce the launch of the second edition of the “Democracy is…” photo contest, sponsored by the U.S. Embassy in Warsaw and the Center of Citizenship Education (CEO). The contest is part of the second edition of the Democracy Video Challenge, a global video competition with the same theme. What does democracy mean you?

    The U.S. Department of State has launched the second edition of the Democracy Video Contest for young filmmakers across the globe. Last year’s grand prize winner, Łukasz Szozda of Poland, travelled to the United States in September , where he and five grand prize winners from other regions around the world met with democracy activists and members of the film and television industry.

    Bruce Nauman Exhibit Opens at the Ujazdowski Castle in Warsaw

    An exhibition of works created by Bruce Nauman, one of the most distinguished American contemporary artists, opened on December 14, 2009 at the Center for Contemporary Art at Ujazdowski Castle in Warsaw. The exhibit includes a selection of sculptures, prints, videos, and installations from several European and American collections.

    October 2009 sounded with marches, overtures, the best of American popular classics, jazz and famous music from the stage and screen thanks to the United States Air Forces in Europe Concert Band, which toured Poland October 19-25, 2009. The USAFE Band toured Poland in celebration of the 90th anniversary of the establishment of U.S.-Polish diplomatic relations. More Photos »

    The exhibit presents the life and work of this prominent stage actress, who won the hearts and respect of both Polish and American theater audiences at the end of the 19th century. In 1876 Modrzejewska emigrated to Southern California with her husband, son, and several friends. There, they founded a utopian Polish colony on a ranch near Anaheim that Modrzejewska and her husband bought. More Photos »

    A concert performed by Polish musicians specializing in baroque music: Liliana Stawarz, harpsichord; Agata Sapieha, baroque violin, and Marc Coudell, viola de gamba included polonaises and mazurkas composed by Jefferson’s close friend and American and Polish national hero- Tadeusz Kosciuszko .

    Miles of Blue Michal Urbaniak’s concert dedicated to Miles Davis

    Polish-American jazzman, the only Polish artist who cooperated with Miles Davis played a special concert on October 25 at the Sala Kongresowa during this year’s Jazz Jamboree Festival, announced Cultural Attache Chuck Ashley. The concert commemorated the figure of Miles and marks the 50. Anniversary of his legendary LP “Kind of Blue” which changed Urbaniak’s life for ever.

    This year’s Laureate of the National Endowment for the Arts prestigious title Jazz Master of Year (2009), Lee Konitz performed with a rising star pianist Dan Tepfer the International Jazz Piano Festival in Kalisz. Mr. Konitz is renowned for his fresh interpretation of jazz standards and one of driving forces of Cool jazz movement.

    American Design Expert Inaugurated Academic Year at Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts

    American design guru, Victor Margolin, Professor Emeritus of Design History at Department of Art History of University of Illinois at Chicago, lectured on “The Future of Design" at the ceremonial opening of the academic year at Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts’ Design Department on October 5 at 12:00. Likewise, he also gave an additional lecture on social design at the Academy on Oct. 15.

    Americans appear (live and filmed) at the Rawa Blues Festival

    The idea of the Rawa Blues Festival was introduced in 1980 by Irek Dudek, great Polish musician and blues promoter. The first festival was organized in the Katowice Theater and gathered some twenty bluesmen from all over Poland and 500 fans. Fourteen years ago Festival moved into Polish biggest and most famous concert arena "Spodek" and became one of the biggest blues festivals in Europe. Festival details. »

    Warsaw University Press and the Embassy are pleased to announce the publication of Czarno na Bialym: Afroamerykanie, którzy poruszyli Amerykę (Black on White: Afro-Americans Who Moved America), a collection of essays about eminent representatives of 20th century African-American culture and politics, including Toni Morrison, James Baldwin, Amiri Baraka, Malcolm X, Spike Lee and others.
