PUMPKINS

Soil pH 6.0 to 7.0 - Sow the seeds after all danger of frost has passed in a sunny location of the garden. Sow the seeds one inch deep, 4 feet apart, in rows 6 feet apart.  Work plenty of compost into the soil before planting, as pumpkins are heavy feeders. Mulch with black plastic to help retain moisture in the soil as well as controlling weed growth, and remember to fertilize your pumpkin patch monthly.  Rotenone or pyrethrum may be used to stop squash bugs and beetles.  Pumpkins take a lot of space in the garden, but are fun to watch grow, as well as to eat!

#87 - AMISH PIE (Cucurbita maxima) 100 days – This excellent Amish variety is a great choice for canning.  The thick, orange flesh is sweet and moist – perfect for pies!  Can weigh up to 75 pounds.

#892 - CUSHAW, GREEN STRIPED (Cucurbita mixta) 75-115 days- An old favorite from the Caribbean that dates back to pre-1893. The 12-15 pound fruits have a hard, thin, green and white mottled rind. The sweet, pale yellow flesh is good for pies or canning. Very prolific.

#86 – ROUGE VIF d’ ETAMPES (Cucurbita maxima)  95 days – A delightful French heirloom prized for its beauty!  The shiny, red/orange, flat fruits are only 6" deep, but 18" in diameter.  They have narrow, deeply ribbed sections, rough bumpy skin and can grow to 40 pounds.  Very unique!

#891 YELLOW OF PARIS (Cucurbita pepo) 110 days - This wonderful French variety bears large, yellow fruits that can weigh up to 25 pounds. Delicious when pureed for soups; excellent quality for pies.

WINTER SQUASH

Soil pH 6.0 to 7.0 - Sow the seeds outside after all danger of frost has passed.  Sow the seeds 1 inch deep, 2 foot apart, in rows 4 to 5 feet apart, in a sunny location of your garden.  Work plenty of compost into the soil before planting and fertilize monthly during the growing season. Mulch with black plastic to help retain moisture in the soil and control weeds. Harvest  the squash when the skin is tough and cannot be pierced with your fingernail.  Store  the squash in a cool, dry place for winter use.

#9006 - BLUE HUBBARD (Cucurbita maxima) 120 days - The best squash for winter storage!  This New England heirloom has fine grained, yellow-orange flesh, with a very sweet flavor.  These blue-green squash are huge, often weighing 15 to 30 pounds, and is a very productive variety!

#97 - TABLE QUEEN (Cucurbita pepo) 80 days - This heirloom was first introduced in 1913, and is still an excellent seller today!  This acorn type squash has dark green skin with sweet, yellow flesh that grow on 6 to 8 foot vines.   The tasty fruits of this variety store 4 to 6 weeks.

#9015 - TURK’S TURBAN   (Cucurbita maxima)   90-100 days -  Highly decorative and colorful, this heirloom dates back to pre-1800.  The 5-8 pound fruits have a distinctive cap on top and are visually appealing with its beautiful red, orange and yellow markings.  Fair table quality; excellent for autumn displays.

SUMMER SQUASH

Soil pH 6.0 to 7.0 - Sow the seeds outside in a sunny location, after all danger of frost has passed.  Plant the seeds 1 inch deep, about 2 feet apart, and at least 4 feet away from other vegetable rows.  Hint: A very good method of planting is to sow 5 to 6 seeds in the middle of a 4' x 4' raised bed, thinning to two plants per bed.  Work plenty of compost into the soil before planting. Squash is a heavy feeder and should be fertilized monthly during the growing season. Rotenone or pyrethrum may be used to control cucumber beetles.

#9016 - BENNINGS GREEN TINT SCALLOP  50 days  - An heirloom variety introduced in 1914. This pale-green, patty-pan type has scalloped edges and finely textured flesh. Delicious sautéed, or use in any recipe calling for summer squash. Heavy yielding variety.

GOURDS

#5111 – BIRDHOUSE (Lagenaria siceraria) 125 daysThe large, round bottom section of this gourd connects to a narrow neck with a smaller, round upper section. The perfect selection for assisting our feathered friends! Harvest the gourds when the skin turns a white-brown color, then  dry thoroughly to make a durable bird house. Due to its long growing time, northern gardeners should start inside and transplant to a sunny location outside after the last spring frost.
