- deep taprooted biennial growing to 2 metres tall with large,
soft, very hairy leaves; yellow flowers are borne in large
terminal spikes; produces a large rosette to 60 cm in diameter
- found mostly in idle areas, pastures and rangelands particularly
on sandy to very coarse rocky soils
- dipped in tallow, mature stalks made good torches in ancient
times; called "witch's-stick"
