VENA

Goal Setting Basics

This session explores ways to set goals with clients in a nutrition counseling session.  It will cover goal-setting theory related to behavior change and achieving positive health outcomes. During this session, we will show clips of effective counseling sessions where the WIC profession set a goal with a client and practice using the VENA documentation tool.

How to Use Fit Kids Materials to Start the Conversation.

This class covers strategies for raising children with healthy weights based on current research and provides counseling strategies for WIC staff to facilitate family-based behavior change. This class is client-centered and focuses on the strengths of family support and parents as healthy role models. It provides concrete examples of questions you can use to start the conversation and become a more influencial counselor.

Introduction to VENA Forms

This session explains in detail the VENA assessment forms, conversation starters, NE codes, and VENA documentation tool. We’ll review how the new and revised forms are used in the Value Enhanced Nutrition Assessment (VENA) Process.

New Dietary Risk Codes

Effective October 1, 2007, the dietary risk codes will change. This class provides definitions, a practical explanation and clarification of the new USDA-mandated dietary risk codes.

Reflective Listening

This topic is a major component of the VENA process. Class participants will learn the differences and similarities between active listening and reflective listening, and how these two techniques complement each other. Class participants will have a better understanding of how to practice Reflective Listening and the benefits of using this technique.

Tools for Building Rapport and Personalizing a Counseling Session

Looking for some techniques to personalize your individual counseling sessions?
In this class we’ll cover six quick and easy ways you can build rapport and tailor a nutrition message by using emotion, a highlighter, and a sticker. We’ll watch how a WIC professional uses these techniques in a 7-minute mock counseling session.

What Is VENA?

This class will help you understand the five steps in the VENA Process and the new focus of assessing our participants based on desired health outcomes.  After attending this class, you should have a basic understanding of how VENA will affect nutrition services in the clinic.
