Breastfeeding

A Medication Guide for Breastfeeding Moms: Learning to Use the Resource

Peer counselors have been provided with a copy of Dr. Hale's book A Medication Guide for Breastfeeding Moms. This class is designed to assist the peer counselor in using this book to provide information to breastfeeding mothers. Bring your book to class.

Anatomy of the Breastfeeding Process

Anatomy and physiology of the breast will provide the student with information about breast structure, the influence of hormones on the breast, and how both relate to breastfeeding. Provides information to help a mother improve her milk transfer and thus her milk volume. The student will have information to help identify mothers at risk for breastfeeding-related difficulties.

Benefits of Breastfeeding — Why Should We Teach Mothers to Breastfeed?

Case studies are stories with an educational message. This class covers common problems breastfeeding mothers encounter. The participant will be able to interact and problem-solve with the instructor and other participants throughout the state.

Common Breast Complications Associated with Breastfeeding

This class will help the student become familiar with common problems associated with breastfeeding, who can then help the mother manage and overcome the complications or know when to refer to an appropriate breastfeeding helper or health-care provider.

Contraception and Breastfeeding

Discussion of types of birth control and the impact they have on successful breastfeeding.

Counseling the Mother of the Premature Baby — Part 1

First in a series of Counseling the Mother of the Premature Infant based on Breastfeeding Your Premature Baby by Gwen Gotsch, (which was purchased for every local agency), Your Premature Baby the First Seven Years by Nikki Bradford, and Breastfeeding Special Care Babies by Sandra Lang.

Hot Tips for Peer Counselors

The September 26, 2007 class, 'Spice It Up! Hot Tips for Peer Counselors will be a repeat of the session previously presented May 15.  Topics to be presented and discussed will include counseling teens and partnering with schools, using Foxfire reports to reach pregnant moms, incorporating peer counseling into clinic flow during certification, and using Mom's Place Breastfeeding Resource Center.  Peer counselor Lauren Reyes from the Austin/Travis County WIC Program will be the guest speaker.

Discuss effective ways to help the mother and infant overcome their breastfeeding limitations through a case study using the “Eight Level Lactation Consulting Process”.

Is Mom Producing Enough Milk?

Why do breatfeeding moms think they don't have enough milk? In the clinics, the number one concern of most breastfeeding moms is how to tell if they are producing enough milk. This class will illustrate methods and procedures for teaching moms how to tell if their infant is getting enough breastmilk. It will also train staff on how they can determine if the mom has a milk supply problem and what to do about it.

Latch-On and Positioning, Using Asymmetrical Latch

Describes proper positioning of the mother and baby to achieve a good latch-on. The participant will be able to identify signs of a good and bad latch.

Medication and Lactation

This course will aid the WIC staff in determining whether a medication is compatible with breastfeeding. The staff will use the book Medications and Mother’s Milk by Dr. Thomas Hale to evaluate medications.

Nipple Shields and Supplemental Nursing Systems

This course will identify breastfeeding aids that are allowable expenses. It will go over how and when to use these aids to protect and encourage the breastfeeding relationship. It will cover nipple shields, supplemental nursing systems, etc.

Nursing More Than One

Will I be able to make enough milk for more than one baby? Learn some helpful tips for educating mothers of multiples to successfully breastfeed their babies. This class will use the pamphlet Nursing More Than One (Stock number 13-06-11289 ).

Peer Counselor Program Management — Overview of New USDA Curriculum for Peer Counselors

USDA contracted with Best Start to develop a national curriculum called Using Loving Support to Implement Best Practices in Peer Counseling. New materials and resources from USDA for peer-counselor training and program management will be introduced. Breastfeeding coordinators and peer-counselor trainers are the target audience for this session.

Spice it Up! Hot Tips for Breastfeeding Promotion

Learn about hot tips and techniques for spicing up breastfeeding promotion efforts at your agency. See how the attitude of a serrano, the enthusiasm of a chile, and the sauciness of a tomatillo, can blend for just the picante you need to pepper up your breastfeeding rates. This hour will not only challenge WIC staff to implement best practices that will insure moms warm up to the idea of breastfeeding during their clinic visits, but also provide tips for stirring up support from your community partners.

Telephone Counseling: What do you Say After You Say "Hello"?

Utilize active listening for solving breastfeeding puzzles over the phone. Learn to collect information, identify the pertinent parts, and attempt to solve the mystery.


Texas WIC Breast Pump Program 1 — Issuance, Inventory, and Storage of Breast Pumps

The student will learn how to use the inventory forms provided by the Department of State Health Services.

Texas WIC Breast Pump Program 2 — Hollister Breast Pump Basics: Use, Assembly, and Cleaning

The student will learn the differences between manual and electric pumps; identify the basic parts of the Hollister kit required for breastmilk collection; demonstrate the assembly of the Hollister collection kit with the Hollister Elite and Purely Yours breast pumps; list the most common cause of breast-pump failure; list breastmilk-storage guidelines; and properly clean the Hollister Elite loaner breast pump.
