A
Plan to Prevent and Control Diabetes in Texas
The
Texas Diabetes Council's state plan for 2008-2009, Diabetes
and Disparity, offers insight into characteristics of our
state's population contributing to rising diabetes prevalence and complications.
Since 1998, prevalence rates for non-Hispanic blacks have been increasing
at a higher rate than rates for Hispanics and non-Hispanic whites. However,
population projections indicate that Texas’ Hispanic population
will more than double in the next thirty years. It is estimated that the
total number of diabetes cases in Texas will increase by 77 percent in
the next thirty years from 1.3 million in 2005 to almost 2.3 million in
2040. By 2040, Hispanics are projected to comprise the majority of diabetes
cases.

The Texas Diabetes Council Plan
to Control Diabetes in Texas is published every odd-numbered
year. Identifying disparities in diabetes prevalence and mortality,
and the inequities in diabetes education and care that contribute
to a growing burden of diabetes in Texas drive the Texas Diabetes
Council’s plan for fiscal years 2008 and 2009. The six priority
areas identified for action are: advancing public policy, improving
routine diabetes care and preventing complications associated with
the disease, promoting professional awareness and education, increasing
public awareness and education, promoting community outreach and
education, and monitoring and evaluating data.
