Diabetes
Data: Surveillance and Evaluation
Effective
diabetes prevention and control programs depend on valid, reliable data
gathered through surveillance and evaluation. These data sources tell
us how many people in Texas have diabetes and the groups most affected.
They allow for development of culturally appropriate messages and assure
that resources are focused on the areas of greatest need related to diabetes.
The Diabetes Program at TDH develops epidemiological research and reports
on diabetes incidence, prevalence, morbidity, and mortality in Texas.
The Council also contracts for annual statewide telephone surveys through
the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, participates in statewide
and international collaborative data collection projects, and reviews
information from the Health Plan Employer Data and Information Set (HEDIS)
and the Texas Medical Foundation, which is the state’s Medicare
Quality Improvement Organization.

Texas Behavioral Risk Factor
Surveillance System |
The Texas Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS)
is a population-based, random-digit-dialed telephone survey of health
behaviors among Texas adults (18 and older). The reports below are
based on responses to BRFSS questions regarding diabetes.

Texas Community Diabetes Surveys |
Since 2003, Community Diabetes Surveys have been implemented in selected Texas
counties to provide local diabetes prevalence estimates, as well
as information on adult resident health status, personal health
habits and use of preventive health services.
