December 4, 2007 Palacios, Texas - Angler Education Instructor Course - This free workshop is open to anyone 17 or older interested in becoming a Volunteer Angler Education Instructor to teach the basics of fishing in their communities. The program provides the curriculum, equipment, materials and support to help adult volunteers successfully introduce youth and their families to fishing. Teachers receive SBEC credit. Wear comfortable clothing for outdoor activities and bring a snack and/or drink. Held at the Texas State Marine Education Center, 102 Marine Center Dr. Accessible for the mobility impaired. 9 a.m.-2 p.m.; preregistration required. December 8, 2007 Deer Park, Texas - Advanced Fishing Class - The class will provide the opportunity for families to spend time together in the outdoors while learning advanced fishing skills through hands-on instruction. Designed as an intermediate corollary to the Basic Fishing Class, this clinic will equip adults and children (over the age of 6) with a more detailed understanding of fishing methods and aquatic habitat. Completion of the Basic Fishing Class is not required, but encouraged. This program, presented by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, is offered through the City of Deer Park. January 19, 2008 Bellaire, Texas - Project WILD Aquatic Workshop - Learn how to teach young people about aquatic wildlife and ecosystems using fun, hands-on educational activities. During the six-hour training workshop participants will sample activities and receive a curriculum and activity guide. Activities are adaptable for all grade levels, integrated with core subject curricula and aligned to the TEKS. Teachers, informal educators and youth group leaders may take the training. February 2-3, 2008 Copper Breaks SP - Hunter Safety Course - State approved and required course for all hunters born on or after September 2, 1971. Certified instructor and Lead Ranger Wendell Barberee teaches this two-day course. 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Saturday and 12:30-5:30 p.m. Sunday. Participants must take the entire course to be certified. The clinic will focus on the basics of canoeing-paddling, steering and stabilizing the canoe. Wear footwear that can get wet. Space is limited; three-person maximum and 450 pound weight limit per canoe; children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult. March 1, 2008 Purtis Creek SP - Introduction to Backpacking - Are you interested in backpacking but not sure where to start? Learn about different backpacks and how to properly fit the pack, tents, stoves and food. As part of the program we will hike into our primitive sites and learn about site selection and the principals of Leave No Trace camping. March 1, 2008 Sea Center Texas - Nature Day - Fishing, birding and habitat gardening are just a few the activities that will be highlighted at this event. See live animals exhibits, hear many tips on how to enjoy nature in your backyard or at your favorite outdoor getaways. Youth planning to fish will need to bring their own rod, reel, tackle and bait. Cut squid or fresh dead shrimp work well fished on the bottom; no artificial lures and barbless hooks only. Nature scavenger hunt from 10 a.m.-noon; catch and release fishing is from 1-3 p.m. only. March 5-8, 2008 Houston, Texas - Ranching and Wildlife Expo - As a compliment to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and Texas Southwestern Cattle Raiser's Association commercial bull and heifer events and sales, this event features wildlife-related exhibits from TPWD, such as white-tailed deer research from Kerr WMA; Laser Shot interactive systems from Hunter Education, Operation Game Thief trailer, and Texas Big Game Awards, as well as a variety of other groups. The Expo also showcases presentations from experts in the field. Topics include Feral Hog Management, Managing Land for Wildlife and Cattle, Ageing Deer on the Hoof, Habitat Management for Nongame Birds and Bird Identification, Understanding Leasing Your Land for Recreational Use, Restoring Your Land to its Former Productivity, Water Issues, Urban Coyote issues, and The State of the Mountain Lion in Texas.
