The Department of Biological Sciences offers a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Biology. The information provided below is intended as a guide only. Major in Biology Degree Requirements

 

Required courses in Biology:
  • BIOL 1710/1730 - Principles of Biology I with laboratory
  • BIOL 1720/1730 - Principles of Biology II with laboratory
  • BIOL 2040 - Biology of Microorganisms
  • BIOL 2140 - Principles of Ecology
  • BIOL 3451/3452 - Genetics with laboratory
  • BIOL 3510/3520 - Cell Biology with laboratory
  • Choose one Physiology with laboratory from the following:
    BIOL 3800/3810 Animal Physiology with laboratory
    BIOL 4501/4502 Bacterial Physiology with Laboratory
    BIOL 4503/4504 Plant Physiology with Laboratory
    BIOL 4305/4506 Comparative Physiology with Laboratory
  • A minimum of seven additional advanced hours in Biology [* See catalog and Advisor for restrictions on course selection]
Courses to complete required Minor in Chemistry:
  • CHEM 1410/1430 - General Chemistry I with laboratory
  • CHEM 1420/1440 - General Chemistry II with laboratory
  • CHEM 2370/3210 - Organic Chemistry I with laboratory
  • CHEM 2380/3220 - Organic Chemistry II with laboratory
  • Advanced Chemistry or Biochemistry from one of the following groups:
    • Complete one of the following courses: CHEM 3451/3452 - Quantitative Analysis or CHEM 3530 - Physical Chemistry for the Life Sciences or BIOC 3621/3622 - Elementary Biochemistry
    • Complete both BIOC 4540 - Biochemistry I and BIOC 4550 - Biochemistry II (recommended for pre-medical and pre-dental students)
Mathematics requirement:
  • MATH 1710 - Calculus I
Physics requirement:
  • PHYS 1410/1430 - General Physics I (pre-medical students should substitute PHYS 1510/1530)
  • PHYS 1420/1440 - General Physics II (pre-medical students should substitute PHYS 1520/1540)
Technical Writing requirement:
  • ENGL 2700 - Technical Writing (replaces ENGL 1320 in core curriculum)
Other requirements:
  • Must obtain a minimum 2.5 grade point average on all advanced science courses
