UNT In Thick Of Things At Royal Oaks

DALLAS – The North Texas men's golf team opened up play at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate on Monday morning at Royal Oaks Country Club – a course designed by UNT alum and legend Don January, who was a part of the Mean Green's national championship teams in the 1940s and 1950s.

The Mean Green had a solid day in their 36 holes and enter the final 18 holes on Tuesday in seventh place at 3-over par, but only three shots off of fourth-place Michigan, which is even par.

Junior Viktor Forslund led the way for North Texas, as he shot 2-under par through the first two rounds and is tied for ninth place. Sophomore Lenny Bergsson is at even-par and tied for 17th, and redshirt junior Kristof Ulenaers is at 1-over and in a tie for 23rd. Freshman Alejandro Madariaga is at 4-over par and tied for 40th.

The tournament is being played under the Maxwell format, which is unique in that all players from a team are paired together, so the players and coaches get to all be together throughout the day.

UNT coach Brad Stracke said the format gave him a new perspective of his team, and he was pleased with the day.

"Coaches and players get to watch every shot, and I believe the team learned a lot today, I know I did," Stracke said. "Viktor, Kristof, Lenny and Alejandro all played solid today."

The Mean Green will tee off Tuesday at 8:30 a.m., beginning on the sixth hole, in a shotgun start. Live scoring can be found on GolfStat.
