Environmental Health Perspectives Volume 113, Number 4, April 2005
Environmental Health Perspectives April 2005 No longer just an obsession of Americans, the so-called car craze is revving up to become a worldwide phenomenon. Personal auto ownership is growing at enormous rates, and the number of automobiles on the road is expected to double over the next 15 years. Although the influx of cars into ever more remote areas brings the benefits of mobilization, it also exacts a price on the environment in terms of greater fuel consumption, air pollution, and traffic deaths. The Focus (p. A238) looks at what's driving the phenomenon, and what lies on the road ahead.
