The Tokyo American Center (TAC) and other American Centers around Japan conduct programs which focus on a wide range of themes important to the U.S.-Japan bilateral relationship. The American Centers also organize events, from small group discussions to large seminars, to enhance Japanese understanding of U.S. government policies and American society.

In 2007, the Tokyo American Center moved to a new location. The U.S. Embassy Reference Service, which previously shared the Tokyo American Center facilities, is now located in the Embassy building in Akasaka. The reference service, now known as the Information Resource Center, provides information and research assistance in response to public queries. It also distributes e-mail bulletins and develops online materials about the United States.
