FEM (Forum on Environmental Measurements) The EPA develops, evaluates, and applies a wide variety of field and laboratory methods and assesses data quality to characterize the environment and materials entering it (e.g., wastes), and to support its enforcement activities.
These protocols and methods encompass sample collection, sample analysis, quality assurance, and assessment of data quality.
FEM was established to promote consistency within the EPA on measurement issues. It also provides the public and EPA with a central point for addressing measurement methodology issues with multi-program impact.
Test collection methods are available for the following topics: air and radiation; solid waste and emergency response; water; prevention, pesticides and toxic substances; and research and development (R&D).
FEM provides access to
  • List of links to analytical and sampling method sources
  • List of links to analytical methods from non-EPA sites
  • List of links to analytical methods sold by non-EPA, non-governmental organizations
  • Program contacts for help with EPA test methods as well as regional laboratory contact information (regions 1-10)
Online. Provides an overview of the EPA's FEM program.
The FEM also maintains the Test Method Collections website.
No registration or fee required for access to either website.

USDA National Geospatial Data Gateway
  • Provides easy access to a single place for natural resource data
  • Provides a way to locate data for selected geographic areas, find the desired types of data, and deliver the data packaged in compatible formats for the user
  • USDA service centers offer "one-stop" service to customers of all service center agencies including the Farm Services Agency, NRCS, and Rural Development
  • The data sets served by the Gateway are primarily determined by the USDA Service Center Geographic Information System (GIS) Strategy
  • The Gateway is an e-business-like application whose purpose is to take orders, create, and deliver digital products from distributed data sources
  • The Gateway's navigation service uses Environmental Systems Research Institute, Arc Internet Map Server, Spatial Database Engine, and Structured Query Language server data to facilitate locating the land of interest
  • Search for available data by geographic area (i.e. county or state) then use point and click map tool to find area of interest. Also search for data by theme (such as digital orthoimagery, digital elevation models (DEMs), or soils)
  • Data is downloadable directly onto a computer or available to order on media such as CD
  • Provides access to data from over 20 geospatial themes including plants, climate, hydrography, roads and streams, wetlands, governmental units and place names, elevation, hydrology, and numerous other natural resource-based themes. This also includes four data themes that are critical to the USDA: soils, orthoimagery, common land units, and demographics
Online. Access requires user to create an account and a USDA eAuthentication Login.
  • Two types of access available: USDA Federal Employee accounts, and customers of USDA (non-USDA Federal employee). Determine level of access needed; then click on link for appropriate access level
  • File Transfer Protocol (FTP) downloads are free. CDs are free for USDA personnel and $50.00 for others. DVDs are free for USDA personnel and $100.00 for others
  • Other organizations/individuals needing USDA soil and climatic data can obtain it through the Natural Resource Conservation Service, National Cartography and Geospatial Center (NCGC) Federal Geographic Data Committee clearinghouse
