Classes and Presentations from the NN/LM

The materials given below are only a few of the many training resources you will find at the National Training Center and Clearinghouse's Educational Clearinghouse Database . Be sure to look there for more classes, Web tutorials,handouts and other training materials on your topic.

  • Introducing Health Professionals to NLM's Online Systems. Outlines, course d escriptions and a customizable PowerPoint presentation for providing classes in PubMed, ClinicalTrials.gov, the NLM Gateway, MedlinePlus, and public health resources. You can teach these classes at your institution or doing outreach to health professionals in your community.
  • NLM In Your Pocket ... Medical Research At Your Fingertips. NLM has developed several information resources specifically designed for use on Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs). This one hour workshop is an introduction to two of these applications - PubMed on Tap (PMoT) and PubMed for the PDA (also known as PubMed Anywhere).

  • Consumer Health Classes for Public Libraries:
    • Prescription for Success: Consumer Health on the Web. This hands-on introduction to consumer health information will cover the information-seeking behaviors of consumers, the basics of MedlinePlus.gov, DIRLINE, ClinicalTrials.gov and other reliable web pages such as those from professional medical associations and advocacy groups. It will cover sites devoted to pharmaceutical information for consumers, drug-interaction databases and herbal information.

    • From Snake Oil to Penicillin: Evaluating Consumer Health Information on the Internet.This hands-on course will describe why it is important to evaluate websites. Participants will be given criteria for how to evaluate health information on the Internet.

    • Looking in All the Wrong Places: PubMed for Public Librarians. This 3-hour hands-on class will cover basic and field searching, journal browser, single citation matcher, clipboard, history, and other features. It will also cover how to obtain full-text articles. The title of the PowerPoint can be changed and the class will work just as well for health professionals who are not very familiar with PubMed.

    • Beyond an Apple A Day: Providing Consumer Health Information in the Public Library. This hands-on class will cover the information seeking behaviors of consumers. It will also address the recommended core reference collection, as well as databases and newsletters/ periodicals. It will cover the reference interview, disclaimers, and privacy as well as networking with medical librarians. The class will introduce the students to the Medical Library Association and its local chapters. It will describe possible ways to market this service in a community.
